Misleading marketing and poor-quality leads – not worth the cost
My experience with Access Legal (formerly Unbundled Attorney) was disappointing from start to finish. The program was promoted as a source of high-value, ready-to-hire clients. In reality, the “leads” I received were mostly people who were unqualified, unresponsive, or looking for free advice.
The company tries to “train” attorneys to chase these weak leads by using a repetitive contact script — call immediately, text if they don’t answer, and keep following up for several days. It feels more like spam marketing than a professional referral system.
After about fifteen leads, not one converted into a paying client, and one even had a disconnected phone number.
What began as a supposedly premium, high-ROI service quickly turned into scraping the bottom of the barrel for low-interest, no-budget prospects. They’ve also raised prices dramatically, despite no improvement in quality.
In my opinion, Access Legal’s marketing over-promises and the actual results under-deliver. Attorneys looking for real clients would be better off putting their money into a Box of Cracker Jacks and hoping a client lead popped out! It would take less, time, and save you the hours and hours you spent on the phone in free consults with people looking for free assistance. Nice in theory, but it does not pay the bills. I do enough pro-bono work as it is, and I do not need to pay a company for pro-bono, or low-bono leads, I can find those on my own at no extra cost.

Unqualified leads and no full refund
I signed up and got specific assurances of the full refund. I jumped in. The leads were pitiful. Their training says to work the system, folks need to be employed. They then send leads with unemployed people and folks who literally said they had no money or needed pro bono.
I then decide to stop after my 20 leads and even think to end crim defense as a practice area. I speak with the main guy, who says that he will cover my outstanding bill. I tried his recommendations and lowered my fees and deleted a trial fee. I did get at least 2 clients. I was still unsatisfied with the unqualified leads and overal lead quality, so I quit.
When I asked for the remainder of the refund for the first 20, as per the guarantee, I was told that since they extended my time and I signed up clients, I didn't qualify. I was willing to pay for the new term for trying again and following their advice. Instead, they refused to honor their refund policy. I never agreed to forgo the refund nor was it part of the deal. The guy was also rude at the end and I have a thing about folks using the " black voice" thing when they talk to me. You know, saying "fitty" instead of "fifty", etc.
Tldr: unqualified leads that don't match their program and they did not honor their refund policy.
Response from Unbundled AttorneyMar 28, 2024
Mr. Clements enrolled with our services on August 7th, 2023, and started receiving Criminal leads and working with his support lawyer.
Every new Unbundled Attorney is assigned a Dedicated Support Lawyer that works closely with them to help them learn how to successfully convert their leads into paying clients.
Each new attorney also receives their first 20 leads under our no-financial risk guarantee. This guarantee warrants that they will generate an amount of revenue in retained cases that is greater than the cost of the leads, or we provide a full refund for those leads.
During his initial 20 lead guarantee period, in spite of numerous improvements that he and his support lawyer identified and implemented, Mr. Clements had still only retained one criminal client for a total of $3500 in fees.
Our CEO Mr. Dave Aarons then offered to schedule a Zoom meeting with Mr. Clements to review the outcomes from his initial leads and determine if there was anything that could be done to improve his results going forward.
It became clear during that meeting that one of the primary reasons Mr. Clements was not converting additional clients is that he was quoting the "worst case scenario" fee to his clients, which meant that his fee quotes were always what their case would cost if it went all the way to trial. As a result, his typical quotes would often be between $10k to $15k or more on lower level felony cases, which prompted many of the clients to respond that they couldn't afford it.
So the suggestion was made to shift his quote amounts to be the fee he would need to charge for representation up to but not including trial, which reduced his quote amounts roughly in half.
Given that Mr. Clements had already received 20 leads, Mr. Aarons offered to refund the most recent invoice, and provide 10 additional leads under an "extended courtesy guarantee" to see if he could generate a positive overall return with the next 10 leads.
Mr. Clements agreed and applied these suggestions, and not surprisingly retained another client for an additional $4500 in revenue from his next 5 leads.
In spite of this positive outcome, Mr. Clements elected not to continue with the extended trial as he shared he really didn't want to do criminal law anymore because he didn't feel the financial returns were high enough for him, and he preferred to pivot his practice to personal injury.
By that time, Mr. Clements had retained $8000 in new business from just under $4k in total lead cost. As a result, he was not eligible for a full refund.
Regardless, Mr. Clements did receive a partial courtesy refund of just over $2439 that Mr. Aarons granted to explore the service for an additional 10 leads. As it turned out, Mr. Clements only chose to receive 5 of those additional 10 leads.
In retrospect, our team wholeheartedly believes Mr. Clements could have experienced long term success with this service. He's an experienced attorney and was having success once he implemented the suggested adjustments, but ultimately he decided to go in a different direction with his practice.
With regard to what Mr. Clements shared about our CEO using a so-called "black voice" with him, we reviewed the recordings of the calls that he and Mr. Aarons had and we could not find a reference to the rudeness or manner of speech that Mr. Clements is referring to.
The conversations were focused, collaborative and professional, and the final call ended in a respectful manner where Mr. Aarons and Mr. Clements both agreed that they may explore this relationship again in the future, and Mr. Aarons wished him the best of luck with his PI practice.
While Mr. Clements did not elect to continue working with us long term, we enjoyed working with him and are pleased that he ultimately experienced a positive financial outcome from our service, as well as numerous tips and suggestions that will hopefully benefit his practice in the future.

Total scam
As soon as the trial period ended so did the viable leads. I ended up paying them more money than I was ever paid. It was a total scam and I feel like a fool for trusting them.

Wasted thousands
Wasted thousands. They don't honor their written guarantee that you'll break even. I will be telling every attorney what garbage they are.
