Receptionist on the phone was insanely rude. So guess its not just the Sales staff that are rude... As for your generic answer. I post honest reviews about company’s. The fact of the matter is your whole trip advisors are 1 star. I didn’t specify the reason for my call. But your company was shortlisted for an interview on CBS News. I then removed you because of whoever I spoke to on the phone. Regardless of what you say. Your staff… was rude… maybe do something internally to find this problem out. But it may be a reason as to why 90% of the reviews are bad… start fixing your own problems before you start looking at excuses. That’s why your business seems to be failing at this point.

Josh, We do not see you in our system. Plus we do not use receptionists. If you have something more specific we would be happy to assist you. Your review reputation seems to show that you write reviews like this with no substance. We are a Professional Tax Software company that works with other Tax Professionals.

Disappointing First-Year Experience During Live Tax Season
I purchased Ultimate Tax software in May 2025 in preparation for the 2026 tax season. Unfortunately, my experience during live filing season was extremely disappointing.
I experienced multiple operational issues, including prolonged file conversion problems involving more than 140 client returns, repeated support calls without clear resolution, login/access complications, and Earned Income Tax Credit determinations that did not align with IRS EITC Assistant results.
What concerned me most as a tax preparer was the EITC discrepancy issue. After verifying eligibility through the IRS EITC Assistant, the software still denied credits without diagnostic explanation. Due to compliance and professional liability concerns, I ultimately returned to my previous software provider and incurred additional expense to ensure accurate client filings.
While support representatives were polite, resolving issues often required multiple calls and significant time during peak filing season. In one instance, I ultimately identified the file conversion issue myself after several troubleshooting sessions.
I also submitted a good-faith request for a full or partial refund based on the operational impact to my practice, but no resolution was provided regarding that request.
Tax professionals considering software changes should thoroughly test conversion workflows, credit calculations, and live-season functionality before fully transitioning their practice.
This was my personal experience as a first-year user.

Very Bad Software
I have been an UltimateTax customer for the past two years.
First, almost 70% of my clients are California-based, and nearly 90% of those clients have S corporations. This year, I faced a major issue with clients who made California PTE elections because Form 3804-CR was not available for e-filing.
Their support was 100% unsupportive, when i asked them when will it be added - no response or help just a very basic standard answer which is we don't know.
Second, not having C corporation returns available in the online version is also a big issue.
Third, the partnership basis calculation needs improvement. I noticed that the program does not appear to have a proper basis worksheet for Form 1065 K-1s. My clients were noticing that I am providing them with Form 7203-style basis information for partnership K-1s, which does not look professional.
Also, when a taxpayer has limited basis, the software should automatically carry the allowed loss amount from the basis limitation calculation to Schedule E. It is not convenient or professional to create a second K-1 just to get the allowed loss to flow properly to Schedule E. I have junior preparer, some who completely miss or forget to flow that loss manually to Sch E. The software is supposed to make our life easy, not hard.
State preparation is not perfect either. I would no recommend it.

Thank you for taking the time to write the review. Yes, you are correct, we do not have C Corp online yet. We have that in our desktop version.
Sorry you had a bad experience; that is not the norm for our customers.
For the 3804 we do not have that form, we do have a place on the CA P that it goes. We should have instructed you to that form. However it is currently still and no current plans to add it for e-filing.

Extremely slow to respond and…
Extremely slow to respond and constantly dealing with internal issues. Every time I reached out, something “wasn’t working on their side.” I’ve already lost four critical days in peak tax season because of their delays, and it’s clear they simply don’t care.
Support is practically nonexistent — just empty promises and painfully slow execution. There’s zero coordination between departments, no real solutions, and no sense of urgency.
Not reliable, not trustworthy, and absolutely not worth the money.

Sorry, you see it that way. You ordered on Friday and had the software on Monday. Yes we were affected by a system outage on Monday. We still had software to you. Plus we have been emailing you. Not sure what else we could have done.

Disappointing
It is incredibly disappointing that this software program refuses to offer 1120s and 1041s on the online version and those are only available on a PC computer which leaves it vulnerable to online scams and hacks.
I guess it is now Tax Act for all my tax needs.
Response from UltimateTaxFeb 28, 2026
We are not refusing to offer those forms yet. We are still developing those forms. Though not ready now, they are part of our future online platform.

I paid $1,000 for “unlimited” returns with Ultimate Tax (U-L-T-I-M-A-T-E-T-A-X) and regret it.
The software is a watered-down, glitch-filled version of TaxWise, something that was never clearly disclosed. Throughout 2025, preparing returns was frustrating due to recurring errors that were never fixed.
On January 12, 2026, the software was still incorrectly calculating Maryland tax for a non-resident, even though the non-resident section showed zero taxable income. When I called support, I was told my customer service expired October 31, 2025, despite receiving help in November and December, which they said was only “a courtesy.”
I also asked what would happen if their cloud system went down and how I would access client returns. Support said they did not know. There was no manager available, only the owner, who never called back.
Poor software, poor support, and not worth the price. I do not recommend Ultimate Tax to professional preparers.

We have replied to Mr. Morgan directly. He will not be using UltimateTax in the future. We wish him a successful tax season with his new software.

I was thinking about switching from my…
I was thinking about switching from my current tax prep software and spoke to one of their sales consultants ( Mike ) . In the end , I decided not to switch to ultimate tax and as soon as the sales consultant realized that , he abruptly hung up on me . Very unprofessional . If this is the way their sales consultants treat people , I want nothing to do with them .

Empty Promises - Not all states included (WA state preparers beware)
Response to UT response -
Claiming to have all states while simultaneously admitting you do not have at least one state is a dishonest business practice. Your response should've been - so we didn't realize WA has filing requirements because we never looked it up. We see their threshold is much higher than most states, which could explain why we missed it. Our team will work on correcting it. But that was not your response. Your response was another false claim - you cannot claim to have all states if you do not have all states.
The issue with the screen - that's a SIMPLE DEVS FIX. (Before you say it's not that easy - I've work in IT as a business systems analyst.) If I have to contact support every time I unplug from my docking station to have someone help tell the program which screen it should be on, that's a huge waste of my time and every other preparer who has to deal with it. When I did call, it took 10-15 minutes, once I got to an agent, which doesn't sound like a long time to you - but that's disrespecting my time.
Practice honest business practices and people like me would be willing to actually work with you, rather than leave angry and feeling mislead, disappointed and disrespected.
*Original Review*
I switched from Drake to UltimateTax for the 2023 filing year. Boy oh boy did I pay for that mistake!! It looked great to start with and they even took time to help "train" me. Prior to season start, I felt good about my decision. I learned.
Pros: It's cheap
Cons: Does NOT include all states. WA state doesn't have a regular state return requirement, but DOES have some requirements based on investment income and has some low income credits. NO WA STATE FILES AVAILABLE IN THIS SOFTWARE. I had to take my clients to the WA state DOR page and walk them through how to file it themselves. How unprofressional did I seem to those very same clients I e-filed their WA state returns via Drake the year prior?? I had to give discounts in my service, so the monetary savings was not nearly what it should've been for this software.
Additionally, information doesn't flow from one page to another unless directly linked, so you get the pleasure of duplicating entry in the same exact fields across multiple forms. One small example is the address portion of the schedule C. The software can't be bothered to have the address flow to it?!? We're talking simple stuff here, people.
Complex returns - if you have any, make sure you double check the information flowed to the correct forms. Hunt and find the correct forms, add them manually and manually enter the data - cause UT won't do it for you.
If you have clients with stocks and crypto - be ready to manually enter all transactions. File attachments are limited to 10mb in total, so you will not be able to e-file the return if you attach a PDF of the thousands of transactions your clients make if they enjoy trading. It also does not import the information, so it's yet another time suck
Apart from the simple 1040 returns I had (not many, I specialize in small businesses), every return took at least twice as long as years prior. Most of them took even longer.
At least I have learned a valuable lesson here.
Edit / Add:
I forgot to mention that, if you have a laptop with docking station and choose to disconnect from the dock - make sure you open UT on your laptop screen and open at least one client on there as well or the program will continue to open your client list on a phantom screen that you cannot access, so you won't be able to get into it when traveling to client sites.
In state returns (I also prep a ton of Oregon returns), not all required documents will load, so make sure you double check and manually fill those out for the Portland Public School and Multnomah County taxes (the info won't flow to them)

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. Unfortunately our product did not work for your needs. That does happen sometimes. We have all states. But we may not have forms that you may need. That is why we do provide a link to forms available. I see that we have nothing for Washington.
As for your technical issues with the screen, we could have assisted you with that issue. Our support team is here year-round.
Changing software can be challenging, and unfortunately, it didn't go well for you. We apologize and wish you luck in the future.
