Ruins of a Forgotten City
Ruins of a Forgotten City: Historical Manhattan Walking Tour" TRIP HOBO: "Ruins of a Forgotten City: Historical Manhattan Walking Tour" My wife and I try to do NYC for a week stay every 2-3 years, and have thus covered pretty much the major tourist attractions, major museums, theater, etc. So this trip I searched for guided walking tours and found this EXCELENT one on from TripHobo.com. My wife loves city architecture and history so while in NYC I found this "boutique" VERY specialized walking tour of lower Manhattan. Starting at the iconic Flatiron building this tour takes you down many streets, and shows vestiges of what once was----with detailed and clear explanations (historic & rare pictures) of how things were---and what they changed into. The premise is to walk around modern NYC (lower Manhattan) and be shown little hidden architectural details you would walk right by....or remnants of how a bldg. / street originally was. Along with each building's original design comes it's history and stories of how life was inside. This tour was about 3 hours as I recall, and intrigued us with the title of modern day archeology. Rob (I hope I remember that right) was our EXCELLENT guide and has been researching the history of classic period architecture for over a decade. His mission is to document many fast-disappearing structures as they fall to redevelopment---and he really gives it 110%. Only with a guide as knowlegeable as him can one really become somewhat enlightened. HIGHLY recommend seeking this tour out your next NYC trip (for veteran visitors who have done all the "big" must-do attractions in past trips).
