My story begins back in 2001 when I failed to file my taxes for the first time and a snowball effect ensued for the following 12 years. I had not filed, and I owed close to $50K in backed taxes, interest and late fees. I felt like I was in a hole since the federal government filed a tax lien on me. I had been able to “outsmart” them since I was self-employed, and I did not keep too much money in the bank, but it got to a point where I could not keep a cent in the bank, get a decent car loan and forget about buying a house.
