Not recommended for career switchers or professionals new to VC / PE sector
My experience with Sutton Capital Academy left me concerned about the value delivered relative to the representations made during the discovery call. I booked an initial discovery call on September 9th, 2025 with the owner Joel with Sutton Capital to learn more about the academy and its platform highlighting breakthrough into the Venture Capital / Private Equity profession. Instead of an informative, consultative conversation to see if we were a good fit, the owner, Dr. Joel Palathinkal resorted to high-pressure sales tactics. I was heavily pressured to make an immediate purchasing decision on the spot, with offers that were allegedly only valid if I signed right then. As a consumer, I prefer to take the time to evaluate my options and ask questions without feeling cornered. Before enrolling, I was presented with expectations regarding the quality, educational value and potential benefits of the program. At the same time I also shared my personal life journey and challenges in current career positions. The owner was very well aware of all the information shared on the first discovery call. Post participation I did not feel the course content, instruction or overall experience matched those expectations. This led to me asking for a refund of my fees which was denied in entirety. I made a second request on October 29th, 2025 which was also subsequently denied citing a signed contract been in place. I made multiple refund requests within 30 and 60 days of signing up for the course. This is not an accredited institution and so I would caution anyone that is seeking to make a substantial financial investment. Even Ivy league universities have provisions and agree to refund. Additionally the platform is ideal for business owners, established banking professionals and venture capital / private equity companies. It is not designed for career switches especially if you are pivoting newly to the PE / VC world. Because of the substantial financial investment involved I believe prospective students should carefully review all marketing claims, obtain written documentation of what is being offered, and independently evaluate whether the program justifies its cost. DO NOT SIGN the contract and DO NOT PAY FEES as asked on the call. Your amounts are 100% NON REFUNDABLE and the content is outdated, it is a self study course, all self driven including networking. I have requested a refund and have also filed complaints with consumer protection agencies so that my concerns can be reviewed. This review reflects my honest personal experience. My access is taken away from the course study, the owner is using chat excerpts to fight a case that doesn't have fair grounds.
Response from Sutton Capital Private Equity/VC EducationJun 10, 2026
Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with your experience. We respect every student's right to share their perspective, but we would like to provide additional context and clarify several misleading statements that we believe do not accurately reflect your experience in the program. 8 MONTHS OF ACCESS USED First, you remained actively engaged in the program for approximately over eight months as of May 2026 following your enrollment. During that time, you participated in and had access to live coaching sessions, educational workshops, in person networking opportunities, and other program activities. Your refund requests were made after services had been substantially delivered and after significant participation in the program. As outlined in the enrollment agreement and refund policy that was provided before enrollment, refunds are not available once services have been rendered. While we understand and empathize with the financial and personal hardships you later shared with us, we are unable to provide refunds after a student has received the majority of the program's benefits and services. Second, your characterization of the program as outdated or solely self-study does not align with the program structure or your own documented participation. The program provides multiple live interactive sessions each week, ongoing 1-1 coaching (you were paired with an Investor who works at a large private equity fund and you scheduled 1-1 time with them), guest lectures from industry professionals, networking opportunities in person with private equity / VC professionals in various cities, and recorded content for review. Throughout your participation, you attended numerous live sessions and actively engaged with instructors and fellow students. We also note that throughout the 8 months, you publicly shared positive feedback regarding the program and instructors. For example as documented in your quotes below from just the last 2 months. • Great Class [Instructor Name]" • "[Instructor Name] fantastic class. If there are any opportunities to intern with you simultaneously it would be great to learn from you all of the theoretical concepts in real time." • " This is a really good paper, I haven’t finished all 50+ pages, halfway there, great content and application of economics (micro and macro trends)" • "Fabulous lectures. I feel like a lot of concepts that were half finished during my MBA, your classes are helping me tie in the whole picture." We share these comments not to diminish your current concerns, but because they are part of the overall record and provide important context regarding your experience in the program which is contrary to your account of the events. Describing lectures as "fantastic" and "fabulous," praising course materials, and requesting an internship opportunity with an instructor are sentiments that speak to the quality and relevance of the instruction you received. Regarding the enrollment process, we respectfully disagree with the characterization of our discussions as "high-pressure sales tactics." Program details, pricing, policies, and enrollment terms were provided before enrollment, and participation was entirely voluntary. We held two calls to give you time to review the materials. Like many educational programs, enrollment capacity to support students to the level of high quality that we do is limited, and we communicate those limitations transparently. Ultimately, the decision to enroll was yours to make after reviewing the information provided. Regarding platform access, accounts are placed on temporary administrative hold per our student agreement as standard policy. We appreciate your feedback and regret that your experience did not meet your expectations. We remain committed to supporting our students and their professional goals.
