Not happy with StraighterLine
I am not very happy with StraighterLine. I am currently taking the Anatomy & Physiology 1 course, which is advertised as including a free eTextbook. I checked the FAQs to find out how to access the free textbook, as it is listed as mandatory for the course. However, the tutorial provided suggests there is no textbook specifically for Anatomy & Physiology 1. Upon further investigation, I discovered that the course itself serves as the textbook. Essentially, StraighterLine created the course by copying and pasting content from an actual free textbook that is available at no cost. This means you are paying $79 for the 3 credits, plus the $99 monthly membership fee, to take a course created from freely available material. The original textbook allows use under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY) license, provided proper credit is given to OpenStax and the creators of the book. However, I could not find any credit to the source material on the pages where the information was copied. This goes against their own honor code. The Anatomy & Physiology 2 course also uses the same free book, yet it is still being sold for $79. I would be more satisfied if I could just pay the $99 monthly fee, considering the course material is taken from a completely free source. If you are not concerned about earning the 3 credits and just want to learn the material, save yourself $178 and read the book for free on OpenStax, but if you need the credit like I do then you are stuck paying an exorbitant amount for free material. My review is only based on the Anatomy & Physiology courses. If I had all the money in the world, I would audit the other courses, but I don't. I am unsure if their other courses are the same way.
