Scammers
If possible I would leave less than 1 star. Upon reaching they first helped other, later, customers while they were supposed to be handling our booking. Processing took an hour despite having no customers ahead of us..
the car for our other party they called 1 day later asking for the car to be returned because they the car registration was lapsing.
After having paid an additional amount for out of hours redelivery, nobody was there despite numerous calls and mails. We had to leave the vehicle or we would have missed our flight due to their inability to honour their contract and actually show up.
Then they claimed the car has to be cleaned despite no such requirement in the contract(asking 100 euro service for excessive dirt) and then fabricated a scratch(despite the car being full of dents/scratches upon delivery) and are pushing to hold the deposit fraudulently.
No evidence from their side is provided and no responsibility is taken for what is clearly a company looking to scam people.

Unknown Outrageous Admin Fee
I would definitely not rent from this company. My wife and I went to Malta for a quick vacation and a Smart Rental Car was included in the vacation package. The price of the rental was very attractive. I looked over the car and noted a number of scratches which we documented. As others have noted, they state that they are located at the airport; however, this is not true as they are located approximately a 15 minute walk - with luggage and crossing a busy road to get to their office. The thing that really irritated me was regarding a parking ticket. I admitted to the "agent" that I had a ticket upon returning the car and the agreement states that there is an admin fee. I handed the ticket to the "agent" as he said they could take care of it as we had a limited amount of time to go some "office" to pay it nor did he state that it could have been paid online. However, the "agent" nor the agreement stated what that admin fee is...well, it is 200Euro on a 24Euro ticket....OUTRAGEOUS to say the least. Be careful of fees that they state as they are not documented. When I complained about the hidden fee amount and the lack of transparency by their "agent", their response was the agreement states there is an admin fee for unpaid tickets....which took them 3 weeks to pay after we gave them the ticket upon returning the car. Stay away...and rent from a reparable company like Hertz or AVIS.

I would not recommend this car rental…
I would not recommend this car rental company under any circumstances.
We had only had the car for 10 minutes when we hit a curb and got a flat rear tire. Naturally, we called the rental company, but they did not seem to know how to handle the situation. After several phone calls back and forth, they came out to inspect the car and confirmed that the tire had been torn. They then drove away, only to call us later and tell us to drive to the nearest gas station and inflate the tire. I refused to do that.
After some more time had passed, they suggested that we could have the car picked up by a tow truck for €200 and pay €800 for a new tire and wheel rim. We agreed to this, but first we had to transfer the €200 via an international bank transfer before they would even arrange the tow truck.
To make a long story short, it took a total of three hours before one of the rental company’s employees finally came to pick us up. We were given a replacement car and could continue our journey, but we were already three hours behind schedule.
At the same time, we were told that we could either collect the invoice for our insurance company two days later or when we returned the car the following week. We chose to do it the following week, but unsurprisingly, they did not have any invoice ready for us. They promised to send it by email within three hours that same day.
Later that evening, I contacted them on WhatsApp because I still had not received the invoice. After several messages and phone calls over the next three days, I finally managed to obtain the invoice for the tire and wheel repair as well as the tow truck service.
Their handling of our accident was completely unacceptable, and for that reason I would strongly recommend that others choose a different rental company.

Avoid movis and smart car
I had a different experience but everything you read from others are 100% true, because when I was at their office , there were a lot of complaints from deposit to rent increases to threat, they do not hold a deposit they withdraw and after a month you get back the money ,so I prepared well for my turn, I turn on my camera to record everything I will post on YouTube. 1.I was told meet and greet at the airport but office is one mile walk so not true.2. They insisted to pay extra 10 for congestion while I took the car for sat and Sunday and Monday return ,I showed them that no congestion fee on weekends and also I’m not planning to go to the city centre and also congestion is 0.60 pence per hour but first 6 hours are free .Movis refused to give the car I told them show me in my contract and there is no clause so they call smart mobility and smart said they will refund me the 10 euros but never got back the money. Last , I paid deposit £1300 but the car itself does not cost £200 😁 they did not have the car first so they call a delivery man who uses his car for food delivery, very dirty car he brings to us but we had no option. Upon return the car check was extraordinary trying to find every fault but they could not . So Avoid. My bank blocked the deposit and ask me if I paid and I had an option to say no but I did not , The office was like a war zone every customer was complaining either deposit or congestion or rental increase .too cheap to be true , £3 a day

Absolute scammers - Never Rent From Smart Mobility Malta
Absolute scammers. I booked my rental under ref 29FFE9 from 04/04/2026 - 06/04/2026 for a 8pm collection. The company reviewed & confirmed my booking 24hours post booking however when I came to collect my car, the following took place:
1) All their cars were returned back to a dodgy lot so no cars to rent out
2) The office is dodgy as hell with foul smell all round and 2 other fake rental companies desks in the same premises run by the same 2 gentlemen on sight.
3) I have been chasing to get my refund as never got a car and have sent 8 - 10 chasers without a single response. No customer service quality I suppose.
Imagine the same scenario with a young family outside of the airport at 8pm with this level of service is an absolute joke.

DO NOT USE MOVIS or any other SMART CAR…
DO NOT USE MOVIS or any other SMART CAR RENTAL brand in Malta!
I want to share our experience so others can avoid the same mistake.
We booked a car online for what seemed like a great deal: €61 for 5 days. After carefully reading the terms, I decided to purchase full insurance separately (third-party provider) to be safe.
At pickup, things quickly changed.
First, the price increased to €71 due to a “local tax” that was not clearly communicated upfront.
Then came the real issue:
If you don’t take THEIR insurance, they require a €2300 deposit on a CREDIT card (not debit). We had multiple cards, but all were debit – like many travelers nowadays.
This is where the trap is.
Because of this, we were effectively forced to take their insurance at €35 per day, plus an additional €500 deposit. This increased the total rental cost to almost 4x the original online price.
From what we saw, many other customers were caught in the same situation. This appears to be a core part of their business model.
Other major red flags:
The office is NOT at the airport. You need to go to an off-site location shared with multiple low-cost brands – clearly a large-scale operation.
Communication was extremely difficult. The staff member spoke very unclear English (strong accent, mumbling), making it almost impossible to properly understand the terms or ask questions.
The process felt rushed and confusing: “sign here, here, and here” without proper explanation.
The vehicle condition report was incomplete, and some damages were not listed.
We noticed that the inspection document had already been digitally signed by someone else (!).
The car itself was in poor condition, and even had a service warning light on when we started it.
At that point, after a long and frustrating process, we just wanted to leave.
Thankfully, I took detailed photos and videos of the car before driving away – I strongly recommend everyone do the same.
Final thoughts:
This experience felt like a well-structured upselling trap rather than a transparent rental process.
We will NEVER rent from Movis (or similar “too cheap to be true” providers) again.
👉 My advice:
Always check deposit conditions carefully
Make sure you have a CREDIT card (not debit)
Be very cautious with unusually cheap offers
Document the car thoroughly before leaving
Learn from our mistake.
Stay safe and enjoy your trip.
