The hay is very brown and dusty. The quality has deteriorated so much since I started buying from SPS in 2019.

Hi EO,
We truly appreciate that you’ve been choosing Small Pet Select since 2019, and we’re sorry to hear you feel the quality of our hay has declined. Brown, dusty hay isn’t what we want you or your pet to receive.
We weren’t contacted about the hay from this order before your review, so we haven’t had an opportunity to see what you received or help with your concerns.
Please reach out to our Customer Service team at [email protected] with your order information and a few photos of the hay so we can take a closer look and address your concern.
We appreciate your longtime support, and hope to hear from you.

The products seem decent but nothing special. For the regid price and shipping costs i expected better! From the looks of other reviews I'm not the only one who sees this. Unfortunate they still haven't improved.

I don't know what's going on with SPS…
I don't know what's going on with SPS lately. They used to be great. The hay was super fresh, customer service was good, and shipping was fast.
However, the orders I've received in the last 8 months or so have all been awful. One was filled with large mystery poop from another animal. One was caked in and matted down with mud into a large mud brick. I got two boxes in this last order; One box was only half full and smelled horrible, the other looked like it was packed and then left out in the rain for a long time- it was all squashed down into one blob and smelled like rotten vegetables. I just threw both boxes out immediately and had to go to the pet store to get by for a few days. I got a replacement box from SPS that was again only half full. I ordered a ten pound box and thought "maybe it's the right volume but just in a bigger box?" but I weighed it and it was only 6 pounds.
I will say that every time I've contacted them about an issue, they've given me a credit for next time, but I've had to contact them so many times that I think they think I'm lying at this point; I've gotten some attitude from them that because hay grows outside, they can't keep out every contaminant and some variation is to be expected. I get that but come on. A box full of poop or caked down into a mud brick?! Give me a break- that was not the standard in the past, don't tell me that's the standard to be expected now.
Now even the replacement boxes are no better.
They were so great, and they're one of few places I can find that sells third cut hay, but quality control has really taken a dive. I kept hoping it was just a fluke...Sadly, I think I have to find somewhere else to order from.

Hi Jaime,
Thank you for being a longtime Small Pet Select customer. We were concerned to read how much your experience has changed, especially knowing you’ve continued purchasing our products both directly from us and through Chewy.
We reviewed your account carefully after reading your review. The last product concern we can find reported directly to our team was in April. We don’t see reports of the other boxes described in your review, nor do we see a recent replacement shipment from Small Pet Select. Because some of your purchases have been through Chewy, we may not have visibility into any concerns or resolutions handled directly through them.
Hay is a natural crop, so some variation between harvests is expected. However, concerns such as a significantly underweight box, foreign material, or a box that appears to have been wet or damaged are different matters, and we would want the opportunity to investigate them.
We also never want a customer to feel hesitant about contacting us because they’ve reached out before. When there are repeated concerns, we may ask for photos, packaging information, weights, or other details so we can properly document what happened and share that information with our quality and warehouse teams.
Jaime, please contact us with the order information for the recent boxes described in your review. We’d be happy to review what we can verify and help from there.
We appreciate the many times you’ve chosen Small Pet Select and hope you’ll give us the opportunity to look into these concerns with you.

shipping took to long
shipping took to long, my package got lost never left the for a week. and when I got the hay was mostly hard piece the guinea pig won't eat. for 100$ I expected better quality

Hi Kristine,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We're sorry your Small Pet Select Timothy Hay order was delayed. After reviewing your order, we found that it was caught in a shipping platform printing glitch that left the label in a "created" status and delayed the shipment longer than expected. While the issue has since been resolved, we understand how disappointing that delay was for you and your guinea pig.
We're also sorry to hear that the Timothy Hay wasn't the quality you expected. That's a separate concern, and we'd like the opportunity to take a closer look. Please send us a few photos of the hay at [email protected], and we'll be happy to review it with our hay quality team.
We appreciate your loyalty and want to earn back your confidence.

Shipping is terrible on my recent order
I ordered hay from SPL on Friday 7/17 with paid shipping and my order didn’t get dropped off at UPS until Wednesday 7/22, even though I got an email that said it shipped Sunday 7/19. It’s supposed to arrive on Saturday 7/25, a week after ordering.
I ordered the same kind of hay from Chewy on Thursday 7/23 with free regular shipping and it arrived Saturday 7/25 before my hay from SPL! Something is wrong here.
When I inquired on the shipping with SPL on Tuesday of this same week I received information that is inconsistent with the shipping info on the website.
Update after company response: Although, I appreciate the transparency after the fact, I did bring this to SPLs attention on Tuesday 7/21 and received an AI automated response (it was signed “AI agent”) contradicting the shipping information on the website, as I previously stated. No one reached out to let me know this had been looked into and an error in shipping had occurred. I did just receive an email response as well saying thanks for photo evidence (I never sent, and why would I?) and that they were sending a “partial” replacement (not sure how that would work) but it was followed up with another email telling me to ignore the last email. Yeah, ok. How about just do better, please. With sincere communication from real people so your customers know their issues are being taken seriously for starters. Our furry family members count on your company! Thank you.

Hi Heather,
Thank you for updating your review. You're absolutely right that you received a follow-up email intended for another customer. We regret this communication error and corrected it as soon as we became aware of it.
As we shared previously, we investigated your order and confirmed that a technical printing issue delayed a batch of shipments before they reached UPS. While that issue was isolated, we know it impacted your experience, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.
At Small Pet Select, we're committed to providing quality hay, reliable shipping, and responsive customer support for rabbit and small pet families. We appreciate your feedback as we continue improving our processes, and we wish you and your furry family all the best.

There was a dead bug in my hay and a lot more brown hay than usual.
Response from Small Pet SelectJul 27, 2026
Hi Isobel,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We understand how concerning it can be to find something unexpected in a box of Premium Orchard Hay.
Because hay is a natural agricultural product grown in open fields, the occasional dried insect or plant material can make its way into a bale despite multiple quality inspections. We never use pesticides or fumigation, helping preserve the natural quality of our rabbit hay and other small pet hay products.
When you contacted our Customer Support team, we reviewed your concern, answered your questions, and sent a replacement box so you could feel confident feeding your rabbits.
We truly appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Customer feedback helps us continue improving the quality of our Premium Orchard Hay and the service we provide to rabbit and small pet families.
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to help.

This order was an attempt to correct…
This order was an attempt to correct the problems with the 3 cutting hay but he absolutely hates the 1st cutting. I even tried to mix a few pieces with his 3rd cut and he literally picks it out and pushes it away. It has been several days with the same unwanted results.Your response neglected to point out that I have contacted you on two occasions. Once, I sent a picture and second, I sent an envelope in the mail with a sample of the 3rd cutting that is almost a “dust” like quality that is a huge quantity of the 10 lb box that is completely inedible and must been thrown away. If it is “hand” packed, how is it possible no one seems to notice? His health along with avoiding any blockages is my main concern. His droppings reduced to a very small size after his attempt to forge on the new box. His veterinarian agrees with me at his recent yearly checkup that he needs something other than those small pieces to keep his gut moving. I thought by trying the 1st cut to “blend” with the 3rd cut would add in his digestion and get him back on track. I have seen results when he consumes the longer pieces, the droppings go back to their normal size. All you offered was a small discount on the next order. I have been with you folks for a long time so I have been through multiple seasons of hay growing seasons and/or issues but never like this.

Hi Jeanette,
Thank you for giving our hay another try for Mr. Bugs. Every bunny has their own favorite texture and taste, and it sounds like he's made it very clear that First Cut isn't his top pick! 🐰
Looking at your order history, we noticed that this was your first time trying our 1st Cut Timothy Hay after previously ordering 2nd and 3rd Cut. We love that you were willing to see if Mr. Bugs might enjoy a little variety, even if he had other plans.
Since every rabbit has their own preferences, it can sometimes take a little trial and error to find their perfect match. If you ever have questions or would like help choosing the best cut for your bunny, we're always happy to help. We didn't hear from you after this order, but we'd have been glad to offer guidance.
We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, and we hope Mr. Bugs continues to enjoy his favorite 2nd and 3rd Cut hay.
Wishing you both all the furry best!

Not very soft at all!
This hay is not the softest on the market, not worth the price at all. I've tired all this company's hay and all the hay on the market. Their regular 3rd cut has been softer and greener in the past by far. Don't waste your money.
Response from Small Pet SelectJul 9, 2026
Hi Angie,
Thank you for sharing your experience. We're sorry to hear that this order of our Ultra-Soft Timothy Hay didn't meet the standard we hold it to.
This line is hand-selected specifically for a softer, finer texture, so we'd really like to look into this further. We don't see a record of you having reached out to our Customer Success team. If you could email us at [email protected] with a photo of the hay from your order, we can compare it against our current inventory and address your concern.
We hand-select and check every order of this hay for texture before it ships, and feedback like this helps us keep that bar high. We'd love the chance to look into this with you.
