Bait and switch
About five years ago, after subscribing year after year, I decided to take advantage of a promotional life membership subscription. I also updated my genetic file by purchasing their DNA kit. Soon thereafter, Self Decode radically changed their website, dividing what was a single service into split services with some pay up front upgrades. At first these added pay features were a minor annoyance, but over the years the website has devolved into a bunch of a la carte purchases, so much so, that the original life membership site is hardly recognizable. Usually when one upgrades to a life membership, one expects to receive at least the same level of services, and if improvements occur, then those are usually included as well. There is a tacit understanding that If I am going to pay you in advance, then anything on the website in the future should be included. If you keep putting your website behind an ever-growing number of pay walls, then the original advantage of a life membership becomes meaningless; and off course, one cannot get their money back. If there was some fine print that I missed when I signed up, then my bad, However, when I was reupping every year, there was no extra cost for new information or site changes, these were included with the subscription.
Much of what you get now are reports that seem specific to you and your genetics, but most of it is boiler plate text that often becomes so general that it often conflicts with information in other reports. Take this much of this in one report, then don't take any of the same stuff in another report (you get the meaning). The reports on occasion stray from science in some recommendations, suggesting generic practices such as meditation, yoga, and other forms of general improvement to address real genetic polymorphisms. As any number of writers produce these reports, with many opinions not in agreement with other reports; to some degree it seems their free-lancing products are not affiliated with each other or to a company with prescriptive policies. Many report sections seem like opinions rather than scientific facts.
Overall, I believe Self Hack, then Self Decode, was originally a good idea of a company that has morphed into a sketchy business that treats its customers rather poorly. The goal, not to share and learn together, but use customers as a cash cow. Maybe the company has had some growing pains and problems and perhaps needs some kind of restructuring. It's indeed sorrowful to say that Self Decode appears to have become a self-serving business. Now I visit the site less and less, there just isn't much to do there but look at advertisements.
I hope the company takes this as useful criticism. One place I suggest they start, is to solicit their membership as to how they can improve. For all the years I've been affiliated, I can't recall one instance of customer feedback or a "how are we doing" email. Communicating better with subscribers is a good first step in understanding what they expect, and delivering a great service that both parties can feel good about. Good luck.

Thank you for sharing your feedback, and we genuinely appreciate your long-term loyalty as a customer. We completely understand why the evolution of our platform might feel frustrating, and we want to take a moment to address your concerns openly and honestly.
When we originally offered lifetime memberships, we were a much smaller company with a much simpler product. At that time, we truly had no way of foreseeing the scale of innovation and entirely new product lines we would go on to build. The lifetime access you purchased was never intended as a bait and switch — it was a sincere offer for everything we had at the time, and everything we've continued to add to that core offering.
And we have added a lot. Since your purchase, we've built and included for our lifetime members at no additional cost: custom Meal Plans, Questionnaires, the Recommendations Tool, Action Plans, the Health Overview Report, Lifestyle Assessments, the Lab Test Analyzer, and thousands of new Health, Biohacker, and Trait Reports. These are meaningful additions that were never part of your original subscription, and you've had full access to all of them.
The Plus products — such as PGx Reports, the Longevity Screener, DecodyGPT, Carrier Status, and Ancestry — represent entirely separate, heavily-resourced product lines that required significant investment to develop and maintain. Including them for free across all lifetime memberships simply isn't something we're able to do while continuing to operate and grow. Our original Terms of Service, which you agreed to upon sign-up, do reflect that new products are not automatically included in prior subscriptions.
That said, as a lifetime member, you do have access to in-app discounts on these newer products — a way for us to recognize and reward the loyalty of long-standing members like yourself.
We truly value your support over the years, and we're sorry this experience has left you feeling let down. If there's anything we can help clarify or assist with, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Warm regards,
Cassie

Expert Guidance and Personalized Insights
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Dr. Nacarelli for nearly a year through SelfDecode’s monthly consultation plan, and I can say without hesitation that he is by far the best medical practitioner I’ve worked with to date.
I originally turned to SelfDecode while searching for answers after developing Gadolinium Deposition Disease (GDD) following a routine MRI with contrast. It’s a rare condition that many physicians either don’t acknowledge, or have never even heard of, and don’t know how to treat. To complicate matters further, I also have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and trying to navigate both issues has been incredibly daunting.
I’ve seen more specialists than I can count, and Dr. Nacarelli is the only one who has truly helped me. From the beginning, he approached my case with patience, genuine curiosity, and an open mind. His depth of knowledge is unparalleled, and he consistently goes above and beyond, taking the time to understand my issues, and providing actionable insights and genuinely thoughtful input. Dr. Nacarelli’s open-mindedness, curiosity, and willingness to dig deeper set him lightyears apart from other physicians.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful review, Diana. We agree that Dr. Greg is a gem, and we're glad to hear you've gotten the help you needed. Thank you again, Diana!

Slow, inefficient systems and poor customer service.
Ordered my test kit a week ago and only today has it been dispatched only the tracking number doesn't work. The postage cost was really expensive so I would expect a much faster service than this. I also read that for UK tests, I have to request a return label via email?! I've emailed but consistent with the service I've received so far, I've not received a response.
People often buy these kits because, like myself, they are not very well and are doing everything in their power to help themselves get better. Slow, inefficient systems coupled with poor customer service is not what customers expect from this type of business.
Response from SelfDecodeMar 19, 2026
Hi Sean, thank you for your feedback — we genuinely appreciate you taking the time to share your experience, and we're sorry to hear it didn't meet your expectations.
To provide a little context: your kit was processed and dispatched within 3 business days of your order, which falls within our standard handling window. We understand that when you're eager to get results, even a short wait can feel frustrating, and we appreciate your patience.
Regarding the return label — for non-US customers, this is requested via a quick online form which takes just a couple of seconds to complete. Labels are typically emailed the next day, with a maximum turnaround of 5 business days. We understand this process may not have been as clearly communicated as it should have been, and your feedback on that is genuinely helpful. We are actively working on improving this.
On the support side, it looks a few of your interactions came through our AI chat option, which states it searches the SelfDecode knowledge base and is not able to look up individual account details. We do offer a visible option to escalate to our email support team for account-specific queries — our human support team is always happy to help with those directly, 7 days a week across multiple time zones.
As for our replies not reaching you — we did respond to your emails, but unfortunately your email provider returned our messages as undeliverable, which was outside of our control. If you have any outstanding questions, please don't hesitate to reach out again at [email protected] and we'll make sure you're taken care of.
We truly hope your results give you the answers you're looking for, and thank you again for your feedback — it helps us keep improving the experience for all our customers.
Warmly,
Cassie

This used to be an excellent site
This used to be an excellent site, especially when it was Selfhacked.com. It’s really gone downhill in the last few years. Now I find the reports are incorrect. marking High risk for alleles which aren’t high risk. If you click through to the SNP details you often find the SNP details contradict those on the main report page. I have to double check the reports against snpedia.com and the Selfdecode SNP pages. This isn’t really very good. The tech behind selfdecode needs sorting out. Also, the SNP pages have the feeling of being written or copy and pasted by underpaid people who don’t give a toss. This is very disappointing as Joe Cohen’s original Selfhacked site was so good and so carefully written. (PS: I have been a lifetime member of selfdecode for many years but am now asked to pay extra for reports. How does that work as Lifetime membership?)
Response from SelfDecodeMar 19, 2026
Hi Jane, thank you for your detailed feedback — we can tell you've been a thoughtful and engaged user of our platform for a long time, and we genuinely appreciate that.
We're confident in the scientific accuracy of our reports, which are built on peer-reviewed GWAS research and go deeper than general-purpose databases like SNPedia. In some cases, what may appear to be a contradiction between our reports and SNPedia actually reflects a difference in the type of association being described — for example, whether a study is reporting the risk allele or the protective allele, and the direction of the odds ratio. These nuances can look inconsistent on the surface but are scientifically sound.
We also noticed that you raised the specific example of rs9357271 with our support team recently, and our team walked through exactly this kind of nuance — in that case, SelfDecode correctly identifies the T allele as increasing risk based on GWAS data (OR = 1.47), which is consistent with the underlying study, even if the framing on SNPedia differs. If you have further examples you'd like us to look into, we'd encourage you to send them through — we take every flagged discrepancy seriously and would correct any genuine error immediately.
Regarding the lifetime membership and newer paid features — when lifetime memberships were offered, we were a much smaller company with no way of anticipating the entirely new product lines we'd go on to build. Your lifetime access still covers hundreds of DNA Health, Trait, and Biohacker Reports, plus a significant number of features added at no extra cost since your purchase, including the Lab Test Analyzer, Meal Plans, Action Plans, and much more. The Plus products represent separate, heavily-resourced product lines, and lifetime members do receive in-app discounts on these.
We do hear your feedback and sincerely appreciate it. Please don't hesitate to reach out at [email protected] with any specific examples — we're always happy to investigate.

Longevity Toolkit
SelfDecode has been around for a very long time. Having the ability to get specific dna/gene related health information just for me is priceless. From character traits to health risk propensities goes beyond enlightenment, it allows me to pinpoint and implement lifestyle changes specifically to what works best for my genetics. There is so much more to health and longevity but a one-size-fits-all just isn’t reality when it comes to health so having this platform helps me to dial things in like supplements, diet, exercise and know that I’m doing the best specifically for me. I hope to upgrade one day but even the entry level information is easy to understand. I love needing out on my dna and how it is literally every aspect of who I am, how my body works and how it works best.
Response from SelfDecodeSep 3, 2026
This review is everything — thank you! You've articulated exactly what we set out to build: a tool that replaces the one-size-fits-all approach with insights that are genuinely yours.
The fact that you're using it to dial in your supplements, diet, and exercise based on your own genetics is exactly how it's meant to be used. We'd love to have you upgrade one day and go even deeper, but we're glad the foundation is already making a real difference. Keep geeking out!
