Rover Can be Great! But…
I have used Rover on-and-off for about 3 years now and have noticed some major concerns in that time. I am a Rover sitter and, don’t get me wrong, I am thankful for the app but have noticed a lot of safety and income concerns throughout the years. As of about March 2021 I have started using Rover more frequently as a main source of income and was bewildered by the amount of money taken from my final amounts after each and every stay. Rover says they take about 20% of each stay’s earnings, which is already an enormous amount, but it seems like even more than that a lot of the time. I have had occasions where I should have gotten $300 for a house/dog sitting stay and ended up only with $250 after Rover deductions. It’s quite remarkable considering these “fees” do not go towards taxes or anything like that, it’s all going straight to Rover. So consequentially, I have started just using Rover to find owners who are looking for a sitter, and then request they pay me through Venmo/cash/check instead of through the app. So the app has definitely been great for finding awesome owners, but hasn’t been so awesome as far as income. I’ve read into filing my own taxes for my Rover income as well, and it is a stated fact by Rover that the fees they take out of my pay are solely for themselves. So that’s fun. I’ve also noticed that there used to be a feature that would alert me when a booking request seemed suspicious and would let me know that if I chose to archive the request then it would not lower my Rover ratings. However, I don’t see this effective feature being used anymore as I have found myself in a few situations that seemed sketchy and even dangerous and ended up having to decline the booking after an awkward meeting with the owners. It’s beyond me why they wouldn’t be using this feature anymore and why they wouldn’t require owners to go through a more extensive background check as well, seeing as how sitters can be put into dangerous situations just as much as owners can. It’s also gotten quite annoying that Rover will now send me booking requests that are outside of my preferences that I’ve very clearly set, but they send them to me anyways saying, “this request is outside of your preferences, but we thought you might like it anyway”. Like, no!🤣 There’s a very obvious reason as to why I made those preferences, so I’m not even sure why they ask if they’re just going to flat out ignore them?? And so then you’re forced to awkwardly turn down the booking request and end up feeling like a jerk. Anyways, there’s my rant about Rover things that have begun to get on my nerves!(: I believe I will continue using Rover to find owners who are in need, but I suppose I’ll have to be a but more cautious, and start becoming more adamant about receiving payments from owners through alternate methods.
