Once I connected with the right dog sitter, my experience with Rover was good. Until we met in person, we used the Rover phone numbers to communicate. However, at least four of the sitters I initially contacted through rover responded quickly to my first message and then totally ghosted me for additional follow up. Very frustrating to when they said they were available and then did not answer when I tried to set up a visit or phone call.

Well I finally was able to find a very competent care giver. My Problem is that the calendar feature really did not clearly help me determine if the party was available or not. The other issue was the flow was not always give me an Ontario resident in Windsor, instead it would give me a Detroit / Michigan resident and it should have been a lot easier to specify my preference.

The app is glitchy. I was not able to retrieve messages in a timely manner. Some third party was receiving the updates about my dog that were sent to me. Supposedly, this person doesn't even have a pet or Rover installed on their phone. Very suspicious. I loved our dog sitter and hope this negative experience with Rover doesn't deter her from sitting again.

This is an okay service where you might find a few good people to house sit with your pet. They do not vet people very well and they do not have a very good system for complaints. I've had 2 good sitters and one who was a liar and possibly a meth user who did not respect my boundaries or my house. Rover's solution? Try to work it our with the sitter. Right. Good luck with that.

Rover is a wonderful concept but is only as good as the people they allow on as sitters. I have used Rover for years but stopped for a while after two bad experiences. I've gone back to using it again out of desperation about moving to a new town and not knowing anyone. My first unpleasant experience was a young woman agreed to watch my two dogs for a weekend. She had pics of a nice farmhouse online and said she's been watching dogs since she was a young teenager. However, when we arrived at the house, the house looked like a shack, had a pit bull tethered to a clothesline in a dirt-filled area and he was going crazy as we approached. Inside there were three women, 2 of whom jumped up on the furniture in fear of my dogs (a Shepard mix and a Rottie). I told the sitter I was not going to leave my dogs at a place that was too small to even house their crates (which I had to break down and bring along) and where people in the house were afraid of my dogs. As we were leaving the sitter pointed to my full-blooded Rottie and asked me, "what kind of dog is that one?" I was SO done! My 2nd experience was when I took my dog to the sitter, she wouldn't answer the door of her apartment even though just 15 minutes earlier she responded to my text regarding my ETA. I kept knocking and as I was turning to leave the door opened. The first thing that hit me was the pungent smell of weed. The young lady looked dazed and finally allowed me inside her semi-furnished apartment. She never once touched either of my two small Chihuahua mixes. I told her I couldn't leave my dogs with her as she was too "out of it." I immediately phoned Rover and all they kept telling me was that the sitters were independent contractors. I received 1/2 of my money back, but Rover never looked into the matter much further even though I made a second complaint. Basically, I kept getting the run around and this sitter got paid for a service she couldn't perform. Rover did give me a discount on another service once I complained about the young lady who couldn't identify a Rottweiler. In addition, I've had about three sitters who were all very competent and kind. Again, Rover is only as good as the sitter you get. Paying upfront sometimes takes away your power to decide. I usually use a local pet resort but have recently started trying Rover again. We'll see how it goes.

It is incredibly important to be selective and choose sitters which are a good fit for you and your pet before booking a stay. You can better ensure a good fit by getting to know the sitters and have the chance to ask plenty of questions. Meet & Greets should be preformed prior to booking so that you are able to confirm that the sitter is a perfect fit, and will keep you from being subjected to cancellation fees should the fit be less than ideal. Sitter issues can be frustrating and stressful, and the best way as a to avoid them is to be selective and informed on the care the sitter provides and the environment your dog will be staying. Be clear about your dogs needs and care instructions, confirm sleeping arrangements, potty break times, and emergency contacts before a stay is booked to ensure they are good match for you and they are able to facilitate a safe, stress-free experience while you are away. If your Rover profile is not filled out always add additional information especially your preferred veterinarian an emergency contact you are not traveling with.
