Avoid! Don't think they check if sitters have dog boarding licenses from the council which is legal requirement to board dogs
I selected a local sitter in Southampton and said I would just need to check with my insurance company, but all looked good, she seemed friendly and was available. My insurance company suggested I check some things with her like did she have legal and liability insurance if for example my dog ran off and caused a car accident. She admitted she didn't have insurance but asked me to check Rover's cover. I then discovered by looking at another company dog sitters must have a license by the council - it's a legal requirement and means the Council can check the sitter and the property; see the Government's guidance on this online (I'm unable to post the link). As soon as I asked if she had this license she cancelled the booking. This has wasted so much time and surely Rover should ask to see this license before accepting a member. Rover shouldn't be advertising people who can't provide the legal license. We have a holiday booked and no sitter so I have to start again, this time using a company who do ensure their members don't mind being asked to provide the legal certificates. I'm very disappointed with Rover and will not recommend them.

Hi Kate, thank you for sharing your experience. We’re sorry this situation caused stress ahead of your holiday. Some dog sitters offering boarding may need a licence under the Animal Activities Licensing Regulations, depending on location, services, and income. However, Dog Walking, Drop-In Visits, and House Sitting don’t require one. As self employed individuals, sitters are responsible for ensuring they comply with local council and government regulations. You can also find more information in our Terms of Service and Help Centre. If you’d like help finding another sitter, Rover Support is available 24/7 at (888) 453-7889. -Brittney

Rover closed my account for requesting training for biting because my dog bit someone
Rover offers training for biting. My newly rescued dog bit a friend who came into our home unannounced and stuck their hand in the door. We all went for a walk after and our dog was perfectly fine with them, but I requested training from Rover to be safe.
Rover asked for details about the bite, I gave them the details, and they closed my entire account. When I called for information, they said that it's their policy.
I now cannot use Rover for any services with my other dog, who has never bitten anyone.
I guess the moral of this story is to be careful with being honest with Rover.

We looked after a dog that was horrible…
We looked after a dog that was horrible and rover banned us instead of the dog after the dog bite my wife. Awful app with no respect for the people working for them

Flaky company. Time wasters. Very upsetting.
Having met the pet sitter, gone for a long walk with her and met her own dog. Introduced her to our home and the cat, then made the booking. Also, made it very clear we would be relying on her because of the cat. Arranged to do the same thing 7 days prior to going away. Sent a friendly message to say, “See you tomorrow” only to be informed by her to find someone else from Rover, there are plenty of other people in your area. To be honest this is beyond flaky and also quite upsetting. If I had not messaged, when was she intending to inform us. The day before we were going away? Or just not turn up. Informed, “Rover” to be responded to by AI. A company run by robots who advertise people to look after your pets. Avoid this company. Utilise your local area where you can deal with actual people who are reliable.

Rover- a One Sided Business
Rover- a One Sided Business - it's clear they aren't for the sitters and could care less about the wellbeing of how their platform affects the people that help their clients. They make decisions after "tracking" each interaction and when appealing a request they give you some off the wall reason why they closed the account. After a yr of attempting to talk to someone rather than solely through email I proceeded to establish another acct. That 2nd acct got closed after a week, no refunds. Insane!

They do not care
Over Christmas, my boyfriend & i went to visit his family who we had not seen in a year. The sitters watching our dog called us the second night to tell us they had lost her. It was a painful 2 days of hearing nothing and not knowing where she was. There was a horrible storm passing through our city & all we could think of was her alone in the rain. We were so anxious & upset & had to leave on Christmas Eve night last minute to come home and find our dog. It was the most stressful plane ride of my life not knowing if she was okay. She was still a puppy! Rover was very communicative w us at first and were being helpful. HOWEVER, we spent the night & entire next morning searching for our dog. When we found her, she was dirty & scratched up & bleeding on her face but she was safe with us. Rover didn’t help with a thing once she was found. They offered a $1000 reward for her return but refused to pay for our flights that we took to get home even though we found her once we returned so it was obviously necessary. They took no financial responsibility and the burden fell on us. We didn’t have the money for last minute flights but what were we supposed to do? Finish the 5 days of our trip not knowing where our puppy was when clearly the sitters didn’t get close to finding her in 2 days?? It was absolutely obscene. Contacting rover support & talking to what was clearly someone using AI or just an AI chat bot I don’t even know at this point. We had to cut our trip with our family short, buy plane tickets on Christmas Eve, and spend Christmas day looking for our puppy. We do not regret coming home to find her in the least but this million dollar company couldn’t find the decency to give us money for our plane tickets even though they’ll offer to pay for your dogs cremation if they’re found dead. They also kept giving me the most difficult time about getting her vet bills reimbursed and it took forever to finally receive the check. Even our vet said they were asking for so much. I sent them what they asked for multiple times. Maybe the AI was confused. This app works fine unless you’re in an emergency and then they don’t care about you or your dog. If you can’t afford to cut your trip short & fly back over night just to reunite with your dog, I wouldn’t use this service because that’s the risk you run.

Dangerous Negligence – Pet Safety Incident Ignored by Support
Review: I am writing this to warn other pet owners: Rover.com’s safety protocols and support are dangerously inadequate.
I recently experienced a life-threatening incident where my small dog was found roaming loose in a neighborhood in below-freezing temperatures while under the care of a Rover sitter. I have video proof of my dog alone in the cold, yet the sitter denied the dog had even escaped. Furthermore, the sitter admitted in writing that she stopped walking the dogs for two days because she felt it was “too cold.”
The most disappointing part of this ordeal has been Rover’s response. Despite providing timestamped video evidence and the sitter’s own admissions of neglect, Rover’s support team has been completely unresponsive. They failed to even review the attachments I provided and have ignored my suggestion that this sitter be removed from the platform to protect other animals.
If you value your pet’s safety, be aware that if something goes wrong, you may be left completely on your own. I am now forced to pursue this through small claims court and local media just to get a response. Avoid this platform if you want actual accountability for your pet's care.
