YOU CANNOT TRUST ALL SITTERS ON THIS PLATFORM
I booked a "5-star" sitter on this platform. My pets were neglected, left alone for almost 24 hours, and I was treated horribly by the pet sitter when trying to get a refund.
In speaking to a representative, action would not be taken against this pet sitter unless I escalated my complaint, and I could not remain anonymous, despite the huge amount of documented evidence via the monitored messaging exchange between me and the sitter. The agent was reading text exchange between me and the sitter while on the call and agreed that it showed complete negligence and disrespect from the pet sitter. Bottom line: Unless your pet gets sick (OR DIES), the company does not intervene. This sitter, who put my animals at risk, can continue to offer their services on Rover's platform and steal your money. Rover does nothing about it. Rover's claim is that you can book "trusted care" for your pets, but they have allowed this "five-star", "trusted", sitter to potentially put other animals at risk. Shameful.
In response to the reply I received from Brittney: the fact that the Trust and Safety Team “cannot remove a sitter” or “must try to help the sitter from making these mistakes again” is proof that Rover does NOT care. If Rover did, this person and other sitters like them would be removed from the platform the minute blatant neglect was evident. Since this does not occur, this just shows that safety is not the top priority for the company or its shareholders.
This is a complaint about company policy. Although the members of the Support Teams have tried their best to help, they are limited by what the flawed policies held by this company allow. The same message is heard over and over : “we take this seriously…” but nothing will be done about it.
Perhaps Rover’s management can provide a reasonable explanation as to why a sitter that showed neglect to somebody’s animals could continue to operate under Rover’s “Trusted Pet Care” banner.

Going on a trip and sitter last minute…
Going on a trip and sitter last minute told me couldn’t do it. Rover wasn’t really helpful in finding an alternative and had to find someone on Facebook.

Dog care cancelled and we were not informed.
We booked day care for our dog with Bethany in Carmel through Rover.com. We received an e-mail comforming our booking. It was a special day for my Wife's birthday as we were going on the Snowdonia Mountain Railway. Arrived at Bethanie's house, no one at home. We waited on hour. We could not phone dog sitter or Rover.com , had to use web site. Which was no help. Rover.com informed us she had cancelled our booking, but we were not told. We have received our money back. But lost £90 on train tickets as dogs not
allowed on train. We will not use Rover.com again because their sitters can not be trusted and the service not up to the job

Rover is one of the biggest pet-care platforms, but the key question for me is: how safe is it really?
After dealing with Rover for over a year, I have decided to leave this review because I genuinely believe the platform has serious safety and transparency issues.
Rover is one of the biggest pet-care platforms, but the key question for me is: how safe is it really? In my opinion, Rover gives users a sense of reassurance that is not fully matched by its own terms and processes.
Rover says sitters go through identity verification and profile review. In reality, this appears to mean the sitter uploads ID, pays a fee, creates a profile, and has it reviewed. This is very different from checking whether someone is genuinely competent, properly trained, insured, licensed, or legally compliant to provide dog boarding or day care in the UK.
For home boarding and dog day care in England, many people providing these services need a local council animal activity licence. If someone is boarding dogs in their home, taking payment, and the dogs are not their own, in most cases a licence is required. There are exceptions, but they are specific, and owners should be cautious if a sitter simply says it is not needed (For contract, other platforms require these documents or, as a minimum, they ask sitters to go through their own induction training)
Rover’s own terms appear to place responsibility for legal compliance, licences, permits and insurance on the sitter. From what I can see, Rover does not require UK sitters to upload proof of a council boarding licence, business insurance, or relevant training before advertising. This is a serious concern as anyone can create a profile!
The way the service is advertised could easily lead pet owners to assume they are booking through a large, trusted company that has completed all the necessary checks. In reality, they may be leaving their animal with someone who has simply created a profile and decided to earn extra money from pet care. Some sitters may be excellent, but others may not understand animal welfare requirements, safe dog introductions, maximum dog numbers, or the risks of taking multiple unfamiliar dogs into a home.
I am also concerned about the Rover Guarantee. Many people may believe this is insurance, but Rover’s own terms say the Guarantee is not insurance and does not replace proper cover. It has exclusions, limits and minimum contributions, and it does not cover everything people may assume it covers. For example, sitter property damage and injuries to sitters or their family members may not be covered in the way many sitters expect.
There is also a lot of pressure on sitters to accept and convert requests. Rover’s guidance ''encourages'' sitters to book as many requests as possible. In reality, if sitters decline bookings, the profile is marked as ''low follow-through '' and will be automatically hidden from view. A good sitter should be able to decline unsuitable dogs or unsafe situations without feeling penalised or pushed down in search results.
Rover does not appear to carry out any checks on pet owners. I could not find official Rover UK information confirming that owners are ID-checked, or any other checks before contacting the sitters. This means, in theory, anyone could create an owner profile and contact home boarders. Sitters may then be sharing personal information and inviting unknown people to their home. Rover offers messaging, reviews, and payment processing through the platform, but these features do not prove that an owner is safe or honest. The Rover Guarantee also does not appear to cover theft or damage to the sitter’s home. So the sitter may invite thieves for a ''window shopping'' during potential meet and greet.
Rover’s marketing gives an impression of safety, support and protection, while most of the responsibility and risk seems to sit with individual owners and sitters. When things go well, the platform may be convenient. When things go wrong, the protection may be far more limited than people realise.
I would strongly advise pet owners not to rely only on Rover profile badges, reviews or the Rover Guarantee. Ask for proof of licence where required, proof of insurance, details of experience, and clear information about how many animals will be present. I would also advise sitters to read the terms carefully, protect their personal safety, and obtain proper business insurance before taking bookings.
Based on my experience and what Rover’s own terms appear to say, I cannot recommend using the platform.

Read the fine print before booking!
The sitter was great! It was finding out when it was too late to find another sitter through a different service because of what I was being charged that pissed me off! I chose my sitter based on her proximity to my home and that her profile said she charged $16 a visit. This seemed reasonable so I scheduled a meet and greet three days before my trip. After meet & greet, I finished the booking only to learn the 6 visits total was going to cost me $226! Because, what I didn’t realize is that The pet sitter’s fee is only for one pet, then Rover tacks on an additional $7 per cat (in my case) so I was actually paying $37 per visit for the sitter to feed my cats and change out the water bowls. She didn’t even have to empty litter boxes because I have Litter Robots to take care of that. Again, I’m not blaming the sitter, I’m blaming the fine print and the outrageous fees from Rover.
I will not be using this service again and will caution my friends against it as well.

Still not resolved and now I'm being…
Still not resolved and now I'm being ignored! This is the most ridiculous business transaction I've experienced. I need a supervisor to contact me! My review isnt showing up to warn other clients about Mary and I feel like this isnt her 1st time abandoning a client's animals!
And im still waiting for someone to reimburse me for the carpet cleaning. Mary did NOT even let my babies out to potty in 18 hours, so my living room became their bathroom!
This is unacceptable!
