I booked a sitter to come to my apartment from 5pm - 11:30 pm to watch my dog. My dog is a rescue and cannot be left alone. This was the first time I booked a sitter to come over for my dog. The sitter messaged me a couple hours before she was supposed to come over and said she had to leave for 1.5 hours to walk another dog and that sitters don’t have to stay the entire time when they sit a dog. There was nothing that stated that sitters don’t stay the whole time on the website, I paid for her to stay the whole time, why would I book a sitter that was not going to sit? That makes absolutely no sense!! If you were babysitting a child would you leave for an hour and a half to go watch another child? No. The same logic obviously applies here, and this was a sneaky and manipulative attempt to try and make more money by double booking herself. I asked her to re-schedule the other client and she said she sorry and that she would. At 5pm she did not show up and I messaged her multiple times from 5pm-6pm asking where she was as and asked what was going on. She finally texted me back at 6pm and said she canceled bc she couldn’t cancel the other client and gave me a refund. She did not let me know this, she simply did not show up and left me stranded for the evening and was late for my event that night. She didn’t even have the courtesy to tell me earlier so that I could potentially book a different sitter, she simply didn’t show up or respond to my messages. She said she canceled it and I should have been notified of the refund but I wasn’t which makes me think she did not actually cancel it. Even if she canceled it she should have let me know !!! I can’t believe someone would simply not show up and then not respond to my message for 1 hour into the booking. I had to leave my dog for hours by herself while she whaled in pain the entire time. This was a horrible experience.

I feel like they need a better system of checking on pet sitters. I filtered for no dogs in home and ended up with a sitter who had dogs. I paid for 3 nights and picked my puppy up after the first night because the sitter was not responsive when asking about our puppy. So, I felt uncomfortable leaving her. As well as when I picked up my puppy my dog smelt like pee, she drank more water than I had ever seen her drink in one sitting and she had diarrhea for that whole day. The sitter couldn’t remember her if her leash was her leash when handing her back as well as she couldn’t find her feeding and water bowls I had packed for her to use. And tried to give me some other random bowl of hers. I found the bowls at the bottom of the bag we had her food in. So I’m not even sure what she fed her with. I had asked to pick her up for and evening mid way through the stay and the sitter said sure. But there would be another person there that I would be picking her up from, and said this was her sitting partner. This was never originally mentioned. When I dropped her off she had said that my 12 week old puppy would be with her the entire stay and she wouldn’t be going anywhere. Completely dissatisfied with my experience and will never use a sitting service again.

I used Rover to take care of our dogs and cats. I experience an issue and what I didn't know is that they do not screen for mental health issues, so our drop-in person for 1 month barely was able to take care of the animals, creating a huge mess in the house. Support was arrogant, unhelpful and honestly covering their butts. I think it is a matter of time before there is another round of lawsuits against them. Essentially do not buy into their hype. If something happens to your pets or home you are on your own. Is not only the $250, then they only cover after the home insurance... when I told them about it.. they told me how lucky are you to have home insurance... and the agent even went ahead and said.. post any reviews you want it will not make a difference.. well here is one for you. Terrible company and sad customer service.

Sitters are great! The app is one of the worst I have encountered. Not user friendly if you can get past that confusion all is well.

They have no customer appreciation.

I had filled a complaint on the house pet sitter. River told me they will investigate but until now they have not done anything to get back to me.

TL;DR: I DO NOT RECOMMEND ROVER UNLESS YOU DON’T LOVE YOUR PETS. I don’t understand how Rover gets such a high review. Are they fake? My partner got into a car accident recently. We couldn’t pay as much attention to our dog (a 12lb Shih Tzu) so we used Rover’s boarding service. The sitter left our dog unattended so she chewed on the corner of her two blankets and the sitter wanted to charge us extra. It’s Rover’s policy that owners’ are NOT liable for sitters’ property damage. However, we still agreed to pay for the sitter’s damage for this incidence but not the future ones since we don’t want her to leave our dog unattended in the future. Then the sitter got upset saying my dog had “compulsive tendencies” and she felt uncomfortable taking care of her. W.T.F?Every experienced dog owners/handlers know dogs’ behavior changes when they are away from their owners and home. The sitter didn’t want to take care of our dog because we didn’t want to pay for the future incidents. I had to drive to the sitter’s home that night to pick up our dog while my partner is suffering from his injuries (he was in ICU for a few days and got discharged recently). And I had to deal with the B.S. from this inexperienced and irresponsible sitter. Upon picking up our dog, we couldn’t find our dog’s chew toys in her bag that was dropped off with her. Why do I need Rover if my dog isn’t getting the attention she needs? Might as well lock her up all day in a crate. Rover’s system is fundamentally flawed and unreliable. We are going through a rough time, we don’t want more B.S. We paid for the service so the family and our dog don’t need to go through more stress, but we didn’t get what we need. We planned to use Rover on our future trip. NOT ANYMORE. Imagine if we were out of the country and this happened. We spoke to three representatives looking for compensation because the experience was unacceptable. They couldn’t do sh!t beside adding notes/comments to our case and told us their Trust and Safety team will contact us within 24 hours since three days ago, which they never did. Rover’s customer service doesn’t exist and they are unethical and unreliable. Do the sitters even passed the background check? If you have used Rover before and nothing bad happened, good for you. BUT it only takes one incident and your dog could be gone or injured. Then you will find out how unresponsive and irresponsible Rover is.

Using Rover was a disaster. I utilized a Rover sitter for my female pit in June 2021 while vacationing with my extended family. One day after arriving at the beach, the sitters called to inform me that they were boarding a second dog - another (young) female pit. The dogs had fought (surprise, surprise), and my dog was badly mauled. I completed the six-hour drive home, picked up the dog - and missed virtually all of the scheduled vacation. I subsequently sent Rover the proof of medical bills (and photos of the dog’s throat which was ripped open). Rover continuously claimed they were not sent the right details, so the process took many weeks . Eventually, Rover reimbursed me for most (but not all) of the medical costs, less the $250.00 deductible. They excluded for reimbursement the cost of the follow up visit to the Vet to have sutures removed, etc. The sitter refused to cover any expenses related to the injury. Who boards two female pits together?. Never again!
