I trusted Rover to keep my healthy 2-year-old dog safe while I was away. Instead, he became critically ill while in a Rover sitter's care and died from sepsis after less than 48 hours in the emergency hospital despite over $17,000 in life-saving treatment.
What made this experience even more devastating was Rover's handling of the claim. After assuring me during my dog's hospitalization to focus on his care, my Rover Guarantee claim was denied because the exact underlying cause of his illness could not be determined—even though the veterinary records documented severe dehydration, sepsis, and multiple organ failure. Rover offered to reimburse only the cost of euthanasia and cremation.
Please do your research before using Rover. Ask detailed questions, understand the limitations of the Rover Guarantee, and have a plan for emergencies. I would never want another family to experience the heartbreak that mine did.
There is no support and no guarantee even though it was guaranteed over the phone through my dog's emergency hospital stay.

Warning - they cancel at last minute.
This should be a great business, however both summers I have booked a dog boarder through them and then booked a abroad holiday, and both times the boarder has cancelled just days before the holiday. I have spent the entire day today trying desperately to find another boarder in time for my holiday in 2 days time. Although Rover have said they would offer assistance finding a new boarder I am yet to hear from them. They also only offer a measly £10 credit for cancelations, which quite honestly with the amount of time I've wasted today trying to salvage my holiday is a slap in the face along with the inflated charges of other boarders for late bookings. Not to mention the percentage they will get regardless. Also the wait for the money already paid to Rover does not come back instantly, so if you do find another boarder you will have to double pay, that is if you have the funds....Rover, you need to put something in place to stop this happening in the future to other customers.
I still have not secured a boarder for the holiday, so face a stressful couple of days worrying if my family holiday of £3000+ will be happening. Still, thanks for the tenner.

The person never showed up and I was scammed for my money. I’ve been trying to reach Rover for days. There should be a refund option.

If you care about your dog and your…
If you care about your dog and your holiday DON’T use Rover. I booked a sitter in North Leeds who has wonderful 5 star reviews not only that they say how reliable she is. I went round to drop my dog off 7 hours before getting in a taxi to the airport only to be told my dog couldn’t stay. The sitter had 2 French Bulldogs which she informed me would be staying when I went round for a meet a greet but as my dog has regular walks with a Frenchie I wasn’t concerned. We arrived at her house and she was in the garden. She came to the gate and said she would let the frenchies out individually so as not to overwhelm my dog however this didn’t happen. The bulldogs burst out of her patio doors and one of them went for my dog. Thankfully my husband was there because the sitter seemed scared of the situation and said “I don’t know what to do.” She then just kept saying “I don’t think this is going to work.” The situation between the dogs did ease but after an hour it was quite obvious this sitter didn’t want our dog to stay so we left. The sitter just said “I’m sure you’ll sort something out.” We booked her because we don’t have people that can just look after our dog for a week.
We managed to get a friend to have our dog for 3 nights but my husband had to leave our family holiday to come home thanks to this sitter. She also wouldn’t cancel the booking so I could get my refund. In the end I had to contact Rover Support who initiated the refund.
The irony is the owner of the bull dog has left her a five star review but if our dog had arrived first would the bulldog and their owner have been turned away. I am also prevented from leaving her a review on Rover as the booking was not completed so owners are not getting a true picture of sitters on there.

This was our first time using Rover
This was our first time using Rover. The sitter had great reviews and interviewed well. This couldn't have been farther from the truth.
Our elder dogs had not been cared for as agreed (we paid for this care with additional fees). They were both sick and upset upon our return and we had to take them to the vet. The house was not left in the condition that it was when we left even though the sitter assured us that she always did this. The kitchen was a disaster and not cleaned, and the floors had visible urine and feces which indicates that the dogs were not taken outside within the agreed upon time frames - every 2-3 hours.
I have to question if the reviews were falsely generated or real? I would use extreme caution in using this service.

I would not recommend this service
I would not recommend this service. I tried to register as a pet sitter. They only let you complete the registration after you go through specific steps (okay so far).
But when you get to the ID step, the website says: "By clicking Continue, you are authorising payment to your card for the profile processing fee. Final charges will occur after you have completed this step and submitted your identity verification information."
What happens is that, when you press continue, the payment is taken straight away and an error occurs. If you try again and again, the payment is taken again. It however never progresses to the ID verification itself.
The next day the money is refunded via Stripe. So you don't end up out of pocket (luckily!) but one is stuck on this infinite loop, meaning, it is impossible to sign up to it.
I tried to reach out via whatsapp and email, they don't even read the message, just reply with something completely and absurdly wrong, e.g. "It appears that your bank is declining the transaction. We recommend reaching out to your bank, or trying a different card." when in fact I have proof that the payment was taken numerous times! I sent various emails and I have been ignored. Shame really! It is a known error, other users have reported it, and apparently no one tries to get a resolution or offer any help to deal with it.
Update, 18 August 2026: One month on from my initial complaint via Rover's WhatsApp, and the issue remains completely unresolved.
Rover replied to this review on 23 July saying their team was "working to resolve this as quickly as possible" and provided a phone number. That phone number connects only to a safety emergency line and cannot help with account or technical issues. It was not a useful response.
On 17 August 2026, and for the second time, I received an email from Rover Support stating the issue had been "successfully resolved" and that "necessary fixes" had been implemented. I attempted the onboarding again today, 18 August 2026, and encountered the exact same error: payment taken, error on screen, no progression to ID verification.
I have now formally requested that Rover complete my identity verification manually, as a reasonable alternative given that their automated process has failed repeatedly over the course of a month. I have also requested a complaint reference number and escalation to a senior member of their team.
What concerns me most is not just the technical fault, but the pattern of responses: generic assurances, a useless phone number, and a false closure of my complaint. This is not how a company that takes customer service seriously behaves.
I will update this review again if and when a genuine resolution is provided.

My mum was very badly bitten by a dog…
My mum was very badly bitten by a dog that was boarding with us and Rover deactivate our account because of it!
We worked for them for years and had happy customers and brilliant reviews and this the lovely support we got from them when the unthinkable happened. I spent weeks with my mum taking her to plastic trauma unit.
This company is disgraceful, they don’t care about the sitters at all. Do not work for them!!

Terrible Customer Service
Rover customer service hung up on me twice when I called to let them know one of dog sitters cancelled my appointment because they wanted to go off of the platform and I didn't. They provided no solution to the problem and were incredibly rude.
