Heightened Regulations Critical for Rover.com
As a result of negligent communication from a Rover.com sitter, our 2 dogs were left unattended for the better part of 3 days. One is an elder dog that requires close attention and medication- we are fortunate there was no fatality as a result. We interviewed 4 sitters, none of which were able to deliver our requested 10 days of in-home care. The seemingly competent sitter canceled while we were out of state, with only 24 hours of notice (permitted by the company). I received no direct communication- Rover only sent an email that went to my updates inbox. Rover customer service only offered a $20 credit in addition to our refund, and to contact "emergency" sitters to come take care of our dogs. The "emergency" sitters they contacted were not available to immediately attend to our dogs- we luckily had neighbors and friends come to our rescue and take the dogs into their care. The sitter (Kelly P. in ABQ) left no reason for her cancellation and deleted her Rover profile. To speak with a supervisor at the company, we must call their service line and someone will contact us in 24-48 hours. It's not likely they will take any accountability for what happened. Additionally, 2 female sitters stated they would only be willing to housesit if a husband/boyfriend (unvetted) could accompany them for the duration of sitting due to negative experiences on Wag and Rover. If we were unwilling for these stangers to accompany them, they were unwilling to offer their services. Local and state governments should involve themselves to force Rover to either buckle down on more stringent contract agreements for sitting or they should be banned from our state and others across the nation. The well-being of pets is at stake. CNN published a 2021 article on the negligence of both the company and pet sitters and resulting pet fatalities. The company should be mandated to provide more data surrounding issues from pet owners. Because Kelly P deactivated her profile and cancelled our booking, there's no way to leave a review on the platform, no is Rover taking accountability for what happened. I'm writing to animal protection organizations, city council, and state legislators to propose the platform is more strictly regulated and justice would be proven if the company's policies and practices are more thoroughly investigated.
