All sitters so far did not treat my pet as their own. Lack of Potty breaks, play time and safe environment. Super expensive and they cancel last minute!

Disheartening Experience with Rover Support - No Empathy or Advocacy
I have been a loyal Rover customer for years, trusting the platform to care for my beloved dog while I’m away. However, my latest experience with both a dog sitter and Rover’s customer support has left me utterly disappointed and frustrated.
My dog was recently neglected while in the care of one of Rover's sitters. This resulted in my dog needing veterinary attention and me having to pay for professional cleaning services due to the sitter’s lack of proper care. When I reached out to Rover Support for assistance and to express my concerns, I was met with an unsympathetic and dismissive response from Kris B., a Rover Support representative.
Instead of acknowledging the distressing situation or showing any empathy for the emotional and financial strain this caused, Kris seemed uninterested in helping resolve the matter or advocate for me. It was as if my well-being and my dog’s health were of no concern to them.
I expected better from a company that prides itself on pet care. Instead, I was left feeling unheard and unsupported during one of the most stressful moments as a pet owner. This experience has shaken my faith in Rover, and I will be reconsidering my future use of the platform.

First of all, who is Julia? We never saw her. Upon arrival and departure, we were greeted by someone who was not her. But we would like to thank you for the flexibility with the extensions we requested, as it really was something unplanned on our part.
However, our experience was not the best. Our pet stayed with her for 4 weeks and during that period:
- She acquired a severe ringworm that cost us another $180 and more than 5 weeks of treatment. Throughout our stay, Julia sent us photos of our pet, including on the first day. When we announced that we were arriving from our trip, she promptly sent us a photo of the pet's face covered in white marks, and on top of that, she claimed that the pet had already arrived like that. We looked at the photos she sent us every day and none of them showed the marks. We know that ringworm can be acquired anywhere, but when it was reported to us, it was already at a very advanced stage.
- The box and blankets we left with her were filthy, smelling worse than a zoo cage, and were delivered in tied bags. The smell was unbearable. We know that it was not Rover's obligation, but at no time were we offered, even at a cost (which we would gladly pay), to wash them.
- When she got home, she was scared and very thirsty (she drank 3 full bowls).
- She doesn't mention the number of animals she has, which goes beyond two dogs.
- She mentions in her profile that she has a fenced garden, which is great. The detail is the excess of items it has, which is dangerous if pets are left loose in this area, as it can be a breeding ground for venomous animals or animals that carry diseases.
We would like to warn you, as it really was a disastrous experience.

Do not use Rover
My two small, elderly dogs eat twice a day, get treats twice a day, and need to go out every four hours. Additionally, one gets 1/2 of an arthritis pill with his meals.
After inputting their requirements and routine to Rover, I searched for, met with, and booked an in-home sitter, “M,” who said she could meet their needs. M’s profile had a checkmark in the shield, indicating she had undergone a background check and is one of Rover’s highly trusted sitters.
I left early Monday morning. I later saw on my Ring that M let the dogs out every 5 hours, instead of every 4, and let them out one last time at 11:55 p.m. on Monday night. But she did not let them out the next morning. In fact, more than 14 hours went by before she let them out again. During that period, I became increasingly concerned not only for my dogs, but also for M. I’d tried to contact her through the app to no avail, and eventually worried that she had been injured or was maybe even deceased.
When M did not respond, I contacted Rover support, which was a time consuming process. Ultimately, Rover did not give me M’s phone number, saying they would try to contact her directly, but they did give me the number of her emergency contact and said I should call him. Weird. In any event, right after hanging up with M’s emergency contact, she messaged to say she’d overslept. She finally let the dogs out at 2:15 p.m. on Tuesday, after which she finally gave them breakfast and gave the one his medicine. They had, of course, pottied inside.
As I was out of the country, I reluctantly agreed to continue with M’s services, thinking she would try to do a better job after such a big failing. Not so.
I later noticed on my Ring that she’d let both dogs out again around 4:30; however, she’d only let one back in. My home is in Anchorage, Alaska. It was 12 degrees. She left the other dog out for 1-1/2 hours, exposing her to the possibility of frostbite and hypothermia.
Reviewing Ring footage after the fact, I saw that M had also bonged down in her car (and repeatedly dumped her bong water in the driveway) before immediately driving off, which could have left my dogs without care if she had been pulled over and gotten a DUI.
Thankfully, I was able to find a friend to step in and take over care at this point. When I advised Rover, they initially made me ask M for a refund, which is crazy. I reluctantly did so, but only received a partial refund. On top of that, she’d charged me a $120 cancellation fee.
To their credit, Rover did eventually give me a full refund. But when M lied and left a review blaming communication issues for her shortcomings, implied that my dogs are high maintenance, and recommended that future sitters double and triple check care instructions, they refused to adjust it, saying I needed to ask M to edit it, and if she agreed, they would make the change.
All in all, it has been an extremely frustrating process dealing with Rover. I wasted 1-1/2 days of my vacation trying to resolve immediate issues through Rover, and more time upon my return, as they asked for camera and video footage, along with a written narrative.
Rover claims to take great care to only approve and keep the best sitters on their site, and to facilitate safe, positive experiences. But when there is an issue, they tell you that sitters are all individual small business owners, and the issues need to be addressed with them directly.
M is still listed as a trusted sitter on Rover.com, and that tells you everything you need to know.
UPDATE: Rover’s response to my review is laughable. I have had close communication with Rover on this issue, including earlier this week, when I had a disappointing conversation with a lead, who sympathized, but said there was nothing she could do.

Take your chances with Rover at your own peril
Rover does not provide any leverage for their sitters. So if you have a problem, you can kiss your money goodbye. They take a fee, not sure what for, but there is no guarantee you will receive what you paid for, they will tell you that "each sitter is an independent contractor" and you have to resolve your dispute with them.
I hired the worst sitter in the world, who didn't complete her visits, didn't feed or water my pets, and left my house unlocked. They cannot get any sort of refund, but continue to tell me that if I leave a bad review for the sitter it will help. It won't resurface my $500, however, since scam artists don't care about refunds.
UPDATE: Regarding the company representative "making this right" I have had two interactions with different agents both via email and chat, they cut and paste the same responses asking me for the information that I've already provided, so I am stuck in an echo chamber.

The app told me my sit had been…
The app told me my sit had been canceled then charged me for a refund like 2 minutes later.

I have attempted 3 different times to use Rover. I wanted to have my dogs walked while I was out of town. The first person responded initially bit than not to my follow up to meet my dogs prior to the scheduled date. The second person booked with me, than did not respond to messages and cancelled while it would have been in the middle of the booking. The third was that while there was confusion for the meet and greet, after getting my dogs into the car the second time today we were at the park. The person I was to meet pulled up, never acknowledge us and then texts me with a sudden family emergency. I am upfront and honest about the breed and size of my dogs. This has been beyond frustrating and I will not be using Rover again. I will say I did receive a prompt refund on the one that cancelled mid booking.
