I stopped at the Holiday Inn Chatham. Today I received a Parking Charge of £100 as I had not registered the car details at reception. No one made me aware I had to do so. When I arrived on the car park I was distracted as the staff were having a water fight throwing buckets of water over one another. Not impressed.

🚨 Holiday Inn London Gatwick Airport OVERCHARGING?! 🚨
🚨 Holiday Inn London Gatwick Airport OVERCHARGING?! 🚨
Make this make sense…
Room = £90 ✅Add breakfast online = £119 ❌
So you’re paying £29 for breakfast?!
But if you wait until check-in…Breakfast = £19
Total = £109
So why are they charging £10 EXTRA just for booking it in advance? 🤨
Same hotel. Same breakfast. Different price.
Always double check before you add extras — this is how they get you 💸
I also had a disappointing experience during check-in, particularly around how my medical dietary needs were handled.
I have coeliac disease and a hiatus hernia, which significantly limit what I can safely drink. I explained this clearly when I was offered a beer (around £8 per pint). I was then told there was a gluten-free option, but when I explained I also cannot have fizzy drinks due to pain, I was still offered Coca-Cola.
This showed a lack of understanding and awareness of medical conditions, even after I explained them. I also raised that I was happy to pay for an alternative (around £6 per shot), but the issue wasn’t cost—it was the lack of appropriate response and consideration.
I referenced my rights under the Equality Act 2010, as these conditions can require reasonable adjustments, but I felt dismissed rather than supported.
Overall, the experience left me concerned about both pricing transparency and how seriously customer health needs are taken.

Holiday Inn hotel, Brentwood
We found the room comfortable, but lacked free bottled water and biscuits; these are items we found at every 3 star hotel we have ever stayed.
The Marco Pierre restaurant was limited in choice, but the hotels own food that was available made up for this a little.
However, we found the dining/breakfast staff very helpful, and received excellent service, particularly from Lily and Julie. On the whole a pleasant enough stay, for the purpose we needed.

Friendly staff. Room was comfortable and had excellent disabled room (101), This had raised toilet and support bars as did the bath shower.They have others, but check toilet is ok.
Kids stay and eat free but check.
Breakfast good and plenty to eat (£12 if booked but £17 if walk in.
Terrible evening food ! Avoid. I was only able to upload one photo. Supposed to show “ succulent roast chicken” However you can see it has been fried and it was dry. The fish was very dark brown again too long in the fryer. Each around £17 each !! There are eating places around 10/15 minute drive, which we did not know at the time. See photos. Although discretional service charge they take it anyway!
About 10 minutes from Milestone museum of life, great for kids and reflective adults.

Holiday Inn Darlington North
The hotel is well situated if you want a hotel not far off the A1(M) in the Darlington area. Not the most beautiful of places and largely business sites, fast food outlets and filling stations. SatNav and postcode don’t quite get you to the hotel but leave the A1 at Jnc 59, take the A167 North, turn left after the McDonald’s, then next left and follow that road all the way to the end. The hotel could have better signposting.
Arriving at reception to find a barricade of bags and a queue of people waiting to check in is not the best sight to find. I have considerable sympathy with the lone lady who was checking people in, answering lots of questions and generally having to spend quite a while with each guest/family. Amazingly, she remained friendly throughout. A second staff member would have helped although the reception desk is relatively small.
The bedroom was disappointing and not what you used to expect at a Holiday Inn. A water stain on the ceiling does not make things look any better. With every light in the room on it is still very dark with what appear to be low power lights with lampshades which further reduce the light available. The lighting at the desk is not good for working with. The only place with decent lighting was the washbasin which follows the example of cheap US motels of being in the bedroom and not in the bathroom which has only about a 3-foot gap between the toilet and the shower door. This is flimsy but seems to keep most of the water in the shower. Like most hotels now, soap and shampoo is from bottles with a push nozzle dispenser. The bottles are secured in heavy duty steel frames with Torx “tamper proof” screws. The top of the bottle is very close to the frame so not ideal for easy or drip free use.
A few years ago, Holiday Inn was one of the best hotels for having comfortable pillows. Not here. The mattress was also not the most comfortable. Combine this with a room that was too hot although the website claims that there is air conditioning. If there is it is totally ineffective as even with the temperature set to 10C I had to keep the windows open day and night and did not sleep well. A fan and an oil filled electric heater were in the room which, along with previous reviews, suggests that temperature control is an issue. Any positives? The water was hot and the room was superficially acceptably clean.
For the first breakfast, there were about 6 hotel guests already there almost 10 minutes before breakfast was due to start but absolutely everything was ready and waiting. The food was average plus for a Holiday Inn with a good selection of hot options as well as cold meats, fresh fruit salads, fruit and pastries. On the second morning 10 minutes after the time that breakfast was due to start hardly any food was out for waiting guests. By 25 minutes after the supposed start time some of the expected food was still not out of the kitchen. What a difference between 2 days.
The hotel has an EV charging point in the car park but if you have an EV make sure that you have a good charge when you get there as the charging point has a hand written notice on it saying that it is not working.
All the staff that I spoke with were friendly and trying to be helpful.
Would I stay there again? No. Not when there is a better Holiday Inn 15 minutes drive down the A1.
