Overall it’s a great program and I plan to do more in the future. I had some amazing experiences and made a lot of new friends. There are a few things to note: There are a wide variety of apartments and rooms inside of those apartments, meaning some are drastically nicer, larger, and more updated than others - even though we all pay the same price. Obviously, who is in your group will be a complete toss-up. I had a decent group, but on top of being very clique-y, all the microaggressions, offensive comments, and even an incident where I was physically pushed by someone, all occurred within the group. I had no issues with locals. If you encounter any incident like mine, you shouldn’t expect support from the program. Although all of my program managers were very nice and friendly and I didn’t have any issues with them, they’re basically there for logistics and to make friends. Even after the first couple weeks (of a 4 week trip) they did not know my name and I was even asked more than once if I was part of Remote Year. So as I said, I do actually plan to do future trips, but I would only join a trip if I had a friend coming along or knew others in the group. I would basically be planning my own trip and would be taking advantage of the lodging, coworking space, and a few group events.
Response from Remote YearMay 3, 2022
Amani, thank you for your honest review and sharing your experience. It’s great to know that you plan to travel with us again! At Remote Year, our biggest goal is to ensure that everyone on our programs feels valued, respected, and included. We’re sorry to hear that you had negative experiences, beyond those we have already discussed with you. After investigating the incident where you were pushed, we acted within the maximum realms of our jurisdiction, as the other person was not an active participant of Remote Year. In terms of accommodation - you’re absolutely right, accommodations do vary. That being said, all accommodations in all Remote Year cities meet the same standard as a very minimum, and cost the same per night in each city. Our aim is to provide comfortable, private accommodations in great neighborhoods, rather than standardized hotels so that our program participants can more authentically experience local life. As we don’t own the properties we stay in, we search relentlessly to provide the best standard possible in every location, and this can vary month to month. Thank you for bringing microaggressions from within the group to our attention. As our staff and customer Code of Conduct states, this is absolutely unacceptable. If you are open to connecting, I would very much welcome the opportunity to learn more about these incidents. Please feel free to email me directly and to provide more details, so we can continue to ensure that all Remote Year travelers experience a respectful and inclusive environment. After speaking to your Community Leader, Cata, it became clear that you two are friendly, and that she was likely not the person who did not know your name, which is reassuring! It is possible that a Community Leader from another group may have been unsure of your name, and we apologize if this made you feel not valued. I hope you know this is not the case, just that many of our Community Leaders are not only learning the names of those in their own programs, but also learning the names of those in other programs - who they may spend less time with. Thank you again for your review, as we are constantly striving to improve and deliver the best possible experience to all of our travelers. We’re glad that you had some fun adventures and were able to meet new friends - that’s what Remote Year is all about! We look forward to you joining us on the road again! Thank you, Daniel Smith, VP of Experience Delivery [email protected]
