Beware of Horrific Front Desk Staff Behavior at Checkout – Disgusting Rooms I stayed at Red Roof Inn, 17113 Dumfries Rd, Dumfries, VA 22025 from Saturday, July 4th to Sunday, July 5th, and the entire experience was terrible. Right from arrival, the room smelled awful, specifically around the washroom area at the room entry, and the carpets were incredibly stinky. When I brought this up, the front desk merely handed me an almost completely empty bottle of air freshener. The main issue, however, was the absolutely appalling behavior of the receptionist during my 10:00 AM checkout on 5th July Sunday. Trying to be a responsible guest, I brought the air freshener bottle back which was empty to the desk so I wouldn't be wrongfully charged for hotel property. Instead of accepting it, the receptionist became incredibly rude and tried giving the bottle back into my hands, aggressively insisting that I throw it in the trash myself. When I explained that I was just doing my part to return hotel property, he completely lost his temper, slammed the bottle violently into the dustbin, and literally told me to "GO AWAY." Even when I explicitly told him to have some basic manners with customers, he just kept showing anger. I did absolutely nothing wrong. To be treated with such intense hostility and aggression just for trying to be an honest customer is unacceptable. The rooms are foul, but the staff's behavior is even worse. Avoid this place entirely and avoid such unprofessional receptionists.

They cancelled our reservation less than 24 hours out citing a city permit had not been obtained.

Booked a room. After payment on card was made they said the room was no longer available. They had another room with same bed setup but wanted to charge an additional 12.00 dollars. We declined and then was told it was a non refundable charge for the first room. Not my problem they sold it out from under us. American Express will take care of it. Will never attempt Red Roof again

This is the Red Roof Plus Flatbush in Brooklyn, New York on 1026 Flatbush Avenue I chose Red Roof PLUS+ Brooklyn Flatbush Avenue because my daughter lives nearby and was hosting a large birthday celebration. The location was the biggest positive of my stay. Restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, shopping, public transportation, and local attractions are all within walking distance. If convenience is your primary concern, the location is excellent. Unfortunately, the hotel itself fell far below my expectations. Upon entering my room, I immediately noticed several maintenance issues. A portion of the mirror frame was broken and repaired with gray tape, while the handle used to open and close the curtains was held together with black tape. The shower liner was peeling away from the bottom edge. These issues may seem minor individually, but together they created the impression that repairs were being patched rather than properly completed. Cleanliness was another major concern. There was visible mildew in the shower, grime around the shower controls, and dirt in areas that should have been cleaned before a guest arrived. The bathroom and flooring did not appear thoroughly maintained, and I found myself wiping down surfaces with Clorox wipes before getting comfortable. As a paying guest, I should not feel the need to clean and sanitize a room upon arrival. The room was also warm when I entered because the air conditioning was not running, despite temperatures being over 80 degrees outside. After traveling, guests should walk into a room that feels cool, clean, and welcoming. The room itself was small, which is understandable in Brooklyn, but the closet was shockingly tiny. It was essentially a narrow slit in the wall and the smallest hotel closet I have ever seen. Additionally, hallway noise traveled very easily through the room door. Conversations outside could be heard clearly, which made the room feel less private than expected. The complimentary breakfast was another disappointment. The selection consisted mainly of cereal, bagels, muffins, juice, and powdered scrambled eggs. There was no bacon, sausage, boiled eggs, or other substantial protein options. While I do not expect a luxury breakfast, I expected more variety and quality than what was offered. The most frustrating experience occurred on my final evening when the toilet clogged shortly before 8:00 p.m. My daughter called the front desk and received no answer. I later called myself and eventually reached someone after multiple attempts. I was informed that maintenance was unavailable and that the front desk employee was the only person working. The solution offered was for me to come downstairs and pick up a plunger myself. As a paying guest, I do not believe I should be expected to perform maintenance on my room. While another room was offered, it was not a practical solution. I still had dinner plans, needed to return and finish packing, and was leaving for the airport around 3:00 a.m. Moving rooms on my final night would have been more of an inconvenience than a solution. Thankfully, the toilet eventually resolved itself. This situation also raised concerns about staffing. A seven-floor hotel with approximately 74 rooms should not have only one employee available during the evening. Basic guest needs and maintenance issues should be addressed promptly. Security was another concern. The front desk is completely enclosed behind plexiglass and locked doors, requiring communication through a speaker system. While I understand protecting employees, it left me questioning how guest safety would be handled during an emergency. That concern increased when, around 2:45 a.m. on the morning of my departure, a homeless woman entered the lobby and approached guests asking for money. The front desk employee repeatedly told her she could not remain inside, but because he was behind locked doors, it was unclear what would happen if the situation escalated. Fortunately, she left without incident. What surprises me most is the number of five-star reviews this property receives. Based on my experience, I genuinely struggle to understand those ratings. My stay simply did not reflect the level of cleanliness, maintenance, customer service, and overall quality described in many of those reviews. To be fair, the location was excellent and the bed was comfortable. Those were the highlights of my stay. However, the maintenance issues, cleanliness concerns, poor breakfast selection, lack of responsiveness, inadequate staffing, hallway noise, and security concerns overshadowed those positives. Great location, comfy bed, but major improvements in cleanliness, maintenance, staffing, service, and security are needed.

This is not a review for a specific location. It is a general review of just how badly downhill this once proud chain has gone since the Trueman family opened it decades ago. From 1973 through 1994 Red Roof Inns were spit and polish. Top notch rooms at a fairly reasonable price. Morgan Stanley bought them out in 1994. They sold the chain to Accor in 1999. It has slowly gone down a sewer ever since. I'm not sure who owns it these days, but whoever they are, they're awful. Some locations are nice. Some are hovels. Check that, most are hovels these days. Corporate office is useless. They run some, franchise most others. I believe inconsistent is the best word I can use. My reason for posting this today is most recently my reward points, which I've saved over the past few years and have used many, many times were not honored in my recent attempts to secure a reservation without having to pay. They weren't gifts, I earned them. I never had a problem in the past. Not once ever. For the fun of it, I changed locations, I changed dates, tried weekdays, future bookings, nada. I forwarded written concerns only for their response to be an inane "apologizes but we cannot assist with booking information through email." Booking information? I asked a simple question. Answer me! I don't have a good feeling about any of this and as a result, I decided to cash out through their shop and requested online Visa Cards at a fraction of the value they would've had for overnight stays. Let's see if I get them. Whether or not they honor this, I'll still probably file carbon copy complaints with several Attorney General's offices in a few states.

In a three day span my door key was TURNED OFF forcing me to go to the front desk TWICE for NEW CARDS! But when i went to the desk each time NOBODY WAS THERE for a very LONG TIME. At one point a man entered the lobby from outside. He roamed around the lobby- it made me AFRAID FOR MY SAFETY! The person at the front desk eventually came back offering NO EXCUSES OR APOLOGY. When I called down finally asking for her name it felt like she gave me a FAKE NAME. She hesitated saying JESSE…. I asked for a last name and she stuttered saying HENRY. I am so disgusted with the RR INN I will NEVER STAY HERE AGAIN! Upon entering the room it was very DAMP… sheets and towels too. The furniture and decor is antiquated but it was the DAMPNESS that was so off putting! Thank you. ZM

This was one of the worst customer service experiences I have ever encountered, and the condition of this property is completely unacceptable. I stayed at Red Roof Inn in Jessup, MD because it was closer to my job during my transition into a new residence. I also chose this location because they advertise accommodations for one pet and it was convenient for my work situation. Unfortunately, the treatment I received and the conditions of this hotel were beyond disappointing. The first negative interaction happened on Saturday, May 16, 2026, when the front desk agent literally tossed my room key and ID across the counter instead of respectfully handing them to me. I found that behavior rude, dismissive, and disrespectful. Then on Saturday, May 23, 2026, between approximately 12 PM and 4 PM, I encountered another extremely unpleasant interaction with a front desk agent who displayed biased behavior, poor communication skills, and a complete lack of professionalism or compassion. I explained my work hours and the reason I was arriving later to settle my stay. Other staff members throughout the week had accommodated and assisted me professionally many times before without issue. There was also a temporary discrepancy involving my bank card. My bank representative informed me that I either needed to wait up to an hour for resolution or go to my local bank to retrieve cash and my card. The front desk agent was fully aware that I was actively trying to resolve the issue and make payment for my room — a room I had been paying for consistently during my stay. Instead of showing basic patience, professionalism, or customer service, the agent escalated the situation unnecessarily by calling the police to have me removed IN THE RAIN. I was humiliated and treated unfairly despite making every effort to handle the situation responsibly. To make matters worse, the overall condition of this property is terrible. This location should honestly be condemned due to the presence of roaches and rodents, poor sanitation, lack of proper housekeeping, excessive noise, and the general unsafe and unpleasant environment. The non-smoking rooms also smell heavily of cigarettes and marijuana, which completely defeats the purpose of paying for a non-smoking room. Housekeeping was inconsistent, cleanliness standards were extremely poor, and the constant disturbances made it difficult to rest peacefully after work. This experience was stressful, degrading, and completely unacceptable. Hospitality should involve professionalism, cleanliness, communication, and respect for paying guests. Sadly, this location failed in every area possible. I would strongly caution others before staying at this Red Roof Inn location! What goes around, COMES AROUND. Good luck to that Redroof location management team!
