Scam being run by Reader’s Digest
This is regarding a scam being run by Reader’s Digest (RD). Apparently, in their desperation to make money, new management has resorted to mailing unsolicited “free gifts”, like a book labeled “free gift”, to senior citizens, and then harassing them endlessly for payment, even threatening to send them to collections. I suspect they’re also impersonating a collection agency, because they went beyond threats, and my particular senior citizen (an Air Force veteran in his mid-80s) received a letter from “collections” insisting he pay $36.61 (mysteriously reduced from $46.61 - that’s one expensive free gift) or his credit would be impacted, in spite of the due-date on the invoices from RD not being reached yet. RD still threatens to send him to collections even after that. They’ve been harassing him for weeks now, and it should be noted that this is all AFTER he returned their book to them (that he never asked for) at his own expense immediately after getting the first surprise invoice. The threats never stopped coming. To be frank, their scam pisses me off. RD used to be trustworthy and reputable, but no more. It seems clear they’re bullying the elderly for their money, preying on our most vulnerable citizens, and they need to be stopped, if you ask me. I want other families to know about this so they can protect their loved ones. Mine was scared and confused by it all, and it’s outrageous that after being loyal to RD for decades, they’d target him as prey. The ship must really be sinking for them to stoop so low, but as I understand it, the new owners of RD don’t give a fig about maintaining the quality and integrity of what used to be a trustworthy business. Buyer beware!

I sent in an application for the magazine and sent my check for $10.00. I have never received the magazine. They cashed my check and I sent them a copy of the check. This has been going on for months and I have sent them several letters with a copy of the cashed check .They have not responded, and I have not received a magazine.

They make it impossible to validate your account to cancel a subscription. Their auto enrollment for subscriptions is very shady and unethical they way they do it.

Beware if you are a subscriber
Beware if you are a subscriber. We just got a package in the mail and it says open now free gift enclosed. We just opened the letter attached without opening the box. There was a invoice for almost thirty dollars fir laughter is the best medicine. You are paying for the book and shipping and handling and tax. There evidently a small free gift but it's costing thirty dollars. I put the letter back in the envelope and taped it shut and wrote refused return to sender.

Aggressive advertising, almost impossible to close the account, I had to pay for a lawyer to right a letter requesting immediate removal from all subscriptions. I had sent more than 3 emails and left messages, posted 2 letters. It took time, energy and money. It was exhausting.
