We seem to have gotten a smart dog… still it was not without some issues
We seem to have gotten a pretty smart dog. That being said, communication ceased once he was paid for. The site stated that they dropped him off here, but we later discovered that they no longer do so, so we had to drive 75 miles to another state. The puppy kit, blanket, toy, etc. were no longer being done; the last pictures posted were from the 20th of January; we bought him on the 14th of February; it took 3 weeks to get him. So I called and asked for updated pictures and was told, "It is only a puppy; not a lot of changes happen!" First, he is more than a puppy to us, and second, he was an 18-week-old Great Dane when we picked him up; his last pictures showed him at 45 pounds, and he weighed 58.6 pounds when we got him. So getting a cage, bed, etc. for a 45-pound dog or a near-60-pound dog to provide a safe trip back to our home town from the airport we had to drive to can be different. Also, I called the delivery people, who, BTW, were great. I told them we were leaving and was told they were a half hour behind as there was a back-up in Philadelphia; I asked if they were passing through my city, and was told they were. I informed the company when I purchased our dog that I am paralyzed and that logging trips would be difficult. That trip took a week to recover from. The dog is beautiful; he needed a little training to have him housebroken in about 5 or 6 days; the dog has a drive to learn; he won't take food until he is told to; it took me about 15 minutes to teach him that, and 3 days of that game, so 45 minutes total. When someone reaches into his bowl while he is eating, he stops, sits down, and waits until he is told OK. We do this because we have nine grandchildren, more than half of whom are under the age of five, and we demand safety. It has been two weeks, and we already love this guy. He has also already gained another 10 pounds and about 2 to 3 inches. So I'm not upset with the dog; I'm upset with the lack of communication, with how many things promised on the site were simply discarded as old policy, and with someone telling me, "he's just a puppy," as if I were a child. I'm 58 years old, and I served my community as a detective for 16 years before becoming paralyzed in the line of duty. If their guy can't see the dogs they sell as more than just puppies, and can't speak to people with more respect, he should seek other employment. For myself, who is looking for a service dog, my granddaughter, who is looking for a companion dog, and many of the people who buy puppies from this site, these dogs are more than "just puppies." If you are looking for a good dog, you might get one; we did. He soiled on himself while with the transport team, but he cleaned up beautifully. The company's website needs to be updated to reduce some of the promises made and broken; had we known there would be no blanket, chew toy, etc., we would have brought it; as it was, we swung by a PetSmart and got him something for the long ride home. Don't get me wrong, I love the dog, and I believe this was the only way to get him, but I was disappointed with so many broken promises that were simply explained away as old policy.
