My partner has been trying to see a physical therapist and orthopedic surgeon for months. The Optum system says "authorized" and he gets a referral number, but it is denied on the specialist end when he calls to make an appointment. He additionally has had multiple problems with medication prescriptions. It is the most disorganized and inefficient healthcare system.

I received a bill on Saturday 06 13 26 from Optum Rx for $503.87, for a medication prescribed by my nephrologist on 05 06 26 and filled by Walgreens My complaint is that nobody neither the Dr, Walgreens, Optum Rx or United Healthcare explained to me that this was an expensive 3 tier medication. I wouldn't have accepted if I known it cost this much. There is a federal law that requires health plans to give Out-of-pocket cost and price information before the an Rx is picked up. Someone please try to reverse this charge Truly CKD patient Miguel Cruz

Between their online and phone options, I’ve been dealing with Optum more than 3 hrs today in large part because they cannot source and keep medications in stock. Several months ago a rx I had on home delivery from them was listed as out of stock. When I called about it, I was told there was a supply chain issue and they didn’t know when it would be available. Since it’s something I need and going without it would wreck my system, I had it moved to a local pharmacy who has been able to fill it (despite the so-called “international supply chain issue.”). When my insurance blocked the last refill bc they wanted the cheaper 90-day Optum service, I called Optum again to find out if, after several months, they’d figured out how to get this med back in stock. They had not, so they offered to override the insurance block. Great. Except the process now requires me to call every month when I need to refill and first find out if it’s yet available and if not, have them call my pharmacy for the override that the pharmacy must fill within 24 hrs or I have to jump through that hoop again — a piece of information this online agent didn’t offer and I found out in a subsequent call to a supervisor. But back to online agent #1, after he was so helpful with my first issue (or so I thought), I asked him for help with two additional matters, and after managing the first one and as I’m typing for help with the second, he types his goodbyes and disconnects us. So I have to start over with the virtual assistant and request a new agent. This time I’m asking to move two scrips I see marked as “available for home delivery.” I first ask if they are available, and she confirms they “are in stock now.” So I start the process of moving them over, which involves Optum contacting my doctor. Three hours later, I kid you not, I get a text that one of those two is not in stock and to please call Optum for “ways we can help.” I call and wade through the clunky phone tree and get someone who tells me there’s no way an agent can see if a medication is in stock. I question this, and she says it again. “We don’t have the ability to see if medications are stocked.” But this negates a call from three weeks ago when yet ANOTHER rx filled by Optum was out of stock and I called. That agent told me that it was back-ordered by one week, which panned out to be accurate. I can’t tell if agents are trained with different credentials and information or if some are just flatly incompetent. Optum could not be worse if they actively tried. As a result, I refuse to start other medications I might actually need if they aren’t temporary. That is a health issue. Shame on this company.

I am beyond disappointed with Optum Specialty Pharmacy. I called on June 3 to order estradiol valerate injections for my frozen embryo transfer cycle. The order was processed, and I was told my medication would arrive by June 8. I was also informed that if I wanted next-day delivery, I would have to pay an additional $25. What makes this especially frustrating is that I have been ordering fertility medications through Optum for the past 3 years, and every previous order was shipped overnight at no additional charge. This sudden change was never clearly communicated. It is now June 10, and I have been been told my medication will not arrive until June 13 because it was shipped through USPS. Optum has never shipped my fertility medications this way before. The most alarming part is that I am scheduled to start these injections on June 11—tomorrow. These are not medications that can simply arrive whenever they get here. Fertility treatment follows a strict timeline, and delays can have serious consequences for a treatment cycle that costs thousands of dollars and carries enormous emotional weight. Because of this delay, my backup option is to drive 3 hours each way to Atlanta to obtain medication from another fertility pharmacy, adding hundreds of miles of travel, additional expense, and even more stress to an already exhausting process. Fertility treatment is already emotionally, physically, and financially demanding. Patients should not have to worry about whether the medications they need to stay on schedule will arrive on time. Promising a delivery date of June 8 and then informing a patient the medication won’t arrive until June 13—two days after treatment is scheduled to begin—is unacceptable. Patients undergoing fertility treatment deserve accurate information, reliable shipping, and transparency. After 3 years as an Optum customer, I expected much better.

I’m extremely disappointed by this pharmacy. I’ve had issues before where they just don’t ship my medication and don’t let me know that it can’t be shipped either. I’m literally going in vacation next week and need a certain medication before I leave. I ordered it last week and it has been sitting at there pharmacy since then. I finally called today to complain and they said they would expedite ship it so it would come before Saturday. Then I get a text it’s coming on Monday. They’re completely unorganized and the woman on the phone even admitted that the expedited shipping doesn’t do anything bc they don’t let the people delivering know that it is expedited. So you’re paying 20 extra dollars for expedited shipping just for it to ship normally. Don’t waste your money.

I think the company is more involved in keeping more money rather than helping the people that are supposed to be their customers.

Horrific. They are actually so bad that I will likely pursue a change of employers in order to access better prescription coverage. The constant stress and headaches of dealing with this pharmacy makes me wonder how much worse it would be to have NO insurance and just use Walmart’s cheapest prescriptions. The three years I’ve been forced to use them has been the most frustrating experience I’ve ever had with a pharmacy in 30 years of adult life. Constantly out of stock of multiple medications. Never able to resolve issues in a timely fashion. I can only get a thirty day RX “override” to fill what should be 90 day prescriptions at local pharmacies that actually HAVE the ability to fill the orders. I have to deal with this whole hassle every three weeks in an attempt to not suddenly stop taking prescribed medications. I actually do have other things to do than trying to source for myself medications they can’t provide. They are very misleading because they e-mail the patient that medications are “scheduled to ship” in one or two days and then they don’t ship because they never had it at all. Total waste of time and money. I hate beyond words that my employer contracts with this dump and will avoid future employers that do. Insurance is too expensive to pay every month for me to have to wade through BS and lies and excuses just to get basic medications.
