Free tier is a monthly chore, and it bit me
Used No-IP for my homelab for a while. The free hostname has to be confirmed by hand every 30 days: they send a mail, you click the link. My router updating the IP every few minutes counts for nothing, which I only found out the hard way. I missed one of those mails once and the hostname was gone. It didn't resolve anymore, I couldn't delete it or register it again, and the page just said it was in a 14-day redemption period. The only way out that I could see was paying for a plan. I didn't, and waited it out. Their mails seem to land in spam a lot, by the way: even the sign-up confirmation code ended up there for me, and other users report the same. So check your spam folder regularly if you go with them. Maybe it's not malicious, but it sure feels like it's built to push you toward paying. For a hobby setup I moved to DuckDNS (no complaints so far), and deSEC and dynv6 are also worth a look. Or just use your own domain with the Cloudflare API.
