I am absolutely furious and totally disgusted with NHS Fife I got Plantar Fasciitis when running ( anyone who had had it will know how painful that is ) and made a self referral to Podiatry. They replied to me by letter including 3 pages of Diagrammatic instructions- all of which I had previously found myself on the Internet in 5 mins - and told me that the waiting time would be 16 weeks if I needed to be put on a waiting list ??? Is this their idea of a service ???????? I am managing this condition / pain every single minute of every single day with absolutely no help whatsoever from the very service that is supposed to provide it ?? I’m sure that they will have a ton more of excuses as to why they cannot provide this service adequately- staff, funding etc but none of them “ Hold Water ” in my Universe, In other words - I simply don’t care what their issues are - that’s up to them to sort out / not pass them on to me !!! Dermatology I have wart on the back of my neck that was giving me some issues / went to Doctor who referred me to the Hospital in Kirkcaldy. Dermatologist said they would not deal with it and sent me a web address to get information about it ??? Again, the very people who are supposed help are not providing the service ! There is a certain Arrogance about the above experience by people who think it is acceptable to abdicate their responsibility and simply get one of their staff to write a standard reply which almost treats me as a non person ! Every single thing that you do with NHS Fife has some sort of problem attached to it ??? Whether it is 1. Getting a Doctors appointment in the 1st place 2. Actually seeing a Doctor and not a Nurse 3. Feeling helpless when told to go away and take an aspirin - knowing full well isn’t going to work and the dread of going through the whole thing again . 4. Obviously, getting referred by a doctor to a Hospital to be told by the Hospital that they won’t see you ?????? Is a major problem and concern - I mean where do you take your issue after that ???? 5. Let’s not forget snippy and unhelpful admin staff - making the process more difficult by their attitude??? A totally awful service and experience and yes, I still have Plantar Fasciitis ongoing on a daily basis !

The staff were phenomenal at every level. Friendly, attentive and extremely professional. The ginger nuts were the icing on the cake.

Almost 12 hours in A&E — a system that seems designed around waiting I spent almost 12 hours in A&E with my elderly father, who was ill and frightened, waiting for him simply to be processed through the department. What struck me most wasn’t that nobody was working. People clearly were. It was the extraordinary lack of urgency and the apparent inefficiency of the way the department operated. There seemed to be a lot of movement and activity, but very little visible progress. Patients waited for one person, then another, then another, with long periods where apparently nothing happened. Each individual stage might only take a few minutes, yet hours passed between them. The department gives the impression of being incredibly busy, but from a patient’s perspective it feels more like a slow-moving system that has learned to function around queues rather than eliminate them. I appreciate that A&E has to prioritise the most seriously ill patients and that emergencies will always disrupt the queue. But almost 12 hours should not simply be accepted as an inevitable consequence of running an emergency department. My biggest criticism is therefore not of an individual doctor or nurse. It is of the working culture and process. Where is the urgency? Where is the ownership of getting a patient from arrival through assessment, treatment and either admission or discharge? Who is looking at someone who has been sitting there for eight, nine or ten hours and asking why? When you’re sitting beside a scared and ill parent, every wasted hour matters. The NHS has many hardworking people in it. But describing every failing as the inevitable result of staff being “too busy” prevents us from asking a much more uncomfortable question: could this department simply be organised and run better? From what I witnessed, I believe it could.

At my local surgery there is no continuity at all. Blood tests results? I get a one line text suggesting I lower cholesterol, a link to an NHS page and no reference whatsoever to the problem I came to them with. Nor does it look like there would be any further communication from them. I cannot text back (no reply allowed). To call this service impersonal is to understate the case. I am not seriously ill, I hope not to be, I am not a member of the ‘worried well’ cohort, I don’t want an appointment any more than they want to give me one and I would much prefer to do this as quickly as possible, preferably by email, text or, if need be, by phone. I do not imagine I am alone in this, yet the system is astonishingly inefficient, wastes time and involves needless miscommunication for them as well as their patients. The result is patients feel roundly ignored, there is no follow up on the part of the surgery and it looks as though potentially serious problems could easily be missed, ignored or understated. It is very hard not to see this as a deliberate bulldozing of the population towards some sort of private medicine arrangement in the near future. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if I had a GP whom I knew, could see when necessary, who had some idea of any problems I might have and would text to check up on things? Results emailed automatically? Who had a personal interest? For whatever reason, there is none of this. I am not even a number to these people. Heaven help the very ill, the shy or diffident, the inarticulate or easily confused, those who aren’t at home with email and online services, those who don’t have a surgery nearby, or those who have mobility problems……. ….the people, in fact, who have the most need of the NHS. My surgery DOESN’T look rushed off its feet or under funded. In fact, it looks like it’s had enough of patients and wishes they would all go away. All I wanted was the blood test results and a 2 minute conversation, or even a text, about what they meant and what else could be done.

MCHT Crewe --------------- Perhaps it is time to re consider how to contact outpatients. I receive calls from the hospital whilst out, yet no one leaves a message, so I can recall them & for some reason emails are out of the question!. They then send notification by letter. On a previous occasion their letter arrived on the day of my appointment. Today a letter from MCHT arrived that has been in the postal system for NINE days. Connected with this was a DVLA letter giving me 4 weeks to have an eye test, sent SIX days ago. My hospital appointment is for 15th July & the 4 weeks expires on 17th July for the test. I only hope my eyes will recover within the 2 days! I am unsure if the delays are caused by MCHT or RM or both ! I don't wonder that outpatients miss appointments through no fault of their own. Not a happy bunny !
