The water does get filtered as it passes through the layers, and micro-particles adhere to the PP cotton filter, effectively removing impurities. If you use the shower head for a few weeks, you will visibly notice that the filter becomes much dirtier, which is a clear indication that it is actively trapping contaminants from your water.
