I trekked twice in Nepal with MT Sobek, once in the Hidden Valley of Tsum and once the Annapurna Lodge Basecamp Trek. Both times, our guide was Pranoy Rai. He is amazing, outstanding, incredible in every way. And therefore, so were both trips. After the Tsum Valley Trek, we were not planning on returning to Nepal as we had been there quite a few times but he made the trip so fabulous that we decided to return (bringing 9 more friends with us) for Annapurna Basecamp Lodge Trek. We loved everything, the crew he put together, the things we learned, the fun we had, it was a fantastic lifetime experience. Anyone would be lucky to take these trips.

Over the years, I have trekked on most major (non-technical) mountains spanning all the continents with more than 10 adventure companies. From my perspective MT Sobek ranks highest for group trips. I have been on 3 so far with more planned. Selecting and booking trips is easy and fast with tailored advice provided. The lead up to the trips is logistically efficient from transport, housing, trip prep and payment. The trips are magnificent in terms of the guides, routes, lodging and food with a range of options for various trekking styles. Unlike other companies where meals are often in hotels, the guides select local farm to table restaurants providing cultural insight & more interesting food. The guides provide perspective on geography, people, history and societies passively or if requested, actively. The trips were on uncrowded trails, respecting the locals, offering challenge for the mind and body with an elegant flair and comfort. At MT Sobek, it is the attention to detail that stands out.

Our private trip to Todos Santos and Isla Espiritu was great. We got to do everything we expected to with the exception of a farewell dinner. The guides and instructors were all exceptional and very accommodating. Swimming with whale sharks was fabulous!!

I had many communications with MT Sobek and strongly feel that i was mislead. Timing, guest list, and expectations were completely different than discussed. Once on the trip in comparing with the conversation with the one other family (i travelled single) indicated they were mislead as well, and clearly were about to change trips if MTS did not come up with at least one more traveler (I had let MTS know i definitely did not want to join a group that was only a family + me). Plus other information we shared further revealed there were other significant discrepancies in the pre-travel discussions. what was good was the trip--due to the local company. A mix of walking, hiking and safari in a beautiful country. And the local company was sensitive to our wishes. the first night we were fed only American food--yet we were in Kenya. the family and i discussed this with the guide and he did not believe we really wanted local cuisine--but he went alone--and we were totally happy. We had not seen a leopard and the last night in the Mara i asked the guide to take us out before dawn instead of the usual after breakfast. Having been on safari before i knew getting out in the dark was the best chance for seeing the nocturnal animals (and had already been keenly disappointed that most of the safari part was mid-day). He complied and yes, we saw the leopard! we were the first company out so we had full advantage of the siting for quite a while; later companies were part of the jeep herd--we had a great siting (and a delicious breakfast on return). This would not have occurred had the plan been followed. the trip description was clearly outdated but the local guide listened to us and accommodated as much as possible. Kenya is a wonderful country and well worth visiting. i just would NEVER travel with MTS again. i had voiced my displeasure in advance --yet they never reached out after the trip. I live within 2 miles of the office--one would have thought after they would reach out. they did offer a discount on a future trip but lacking any trust it was unrealistic i would take advantage of the offer. A low price does not make up for a very disappointing experience.

I've taken 5 superb trips with Mt Sobek: Corsica, Jordan, Rwanda-Uganda, Faroe Is and the El Camino. Each was a small group of travellers more interested in learning rather than partying. All of the guides were knowledgeable in a variety of areas and seemed genuinely interested in giving us a unique and comprehensive experience. One of 2 of my favorite small group hiking travel agents, but the one I've used the most because of the unique itineraries.

Our travels with Mt. Sobek over the past 13 years have surpassed all expectations. Interesting, well-communicated itineraries, excellent accommodations, and extraordinarily qualified guides have made each adventure memorable. The small size of the travel groups works well. When either participating as a couple, or with friends, we have enjoyed becoming acquainted with those who share our quest to explore the world on several levels. The bottom line is, we never want to stop learning, and Mt Sobek sees to it that the world is our classroom.
