Good for Cognitive Understanding
My children (7, 9, and 11) all enjoyed playing the mightier games. They were also able to learn about how their body and heart rate responds to their feelings as well as various cool down techniques. I have not seen this cognitive knowledge transfer to behavior in other circumstances. We still have many outbursts and intense reactions in our home. However, this knowledge about their heart rate and the visual meter that they use in the games have given us a vocabulary and mental model that allows us to discuss what is happening in their bodies and how it affects their behavior. I think this is a good first step. Hopefully eventually with time and practice they will actually be able to apply this cognitive understanding.

Hi Janelle, It sounds like your children are off to a great start in their Mightier play and really understand how it works. It's wonderful that you're using the language to help frame emotions and behaviors outside of their game play as well. That real life translation of cool down strategies that your looking for tends to take at least a few months for most kids. The practice they're getting right now by repeatedly bringing their heart rates down is slowly shifting that internal and automatic response to stressors. Hang in there, it sounds like they're really on a great track! If you'd like to talk with one of our Program Specialists a bit more about your children's game play and how they're doing with Mightier, please reach out to us at [email protected].
