Meriwest Credit UnionReviews of meriwest.com

Meriwest used to be THE credit union of San Jose. Very trustworthy and outstanding customer service. Not anymore. I recently found out that Meriwest was charging me insufficient fund fees when I DID IN FACT have the funds in my account. Anytime they charge you a fee they send you a letter/notice. Well it just so happens that when it comes to the insufficient fund fee the notice includes the charge, the company name, you current balance AND the balance you had when the charge was taken out. So I had PROOF that they were stealing from me. Almost $500 a year in fraudulent fees!! The insufficient fund fee is only $10! The CRAZY part is that when I reported them to the state it STOPPED. Of course they did not admit fault but they do not charge me those fees anymore. There is no way I am the only customer they have stolen from. CHECK YOUR STATEMENTS CAREFULLY.

If you try to call this bank, be prepared to sit on hold for hours—not minutes, hours—only to eventually get routed to a dial-in service that can’t actually help you with anything meaningful. If you need a quick response and can’t physically go into a branch, you’re essentially out of luck. That’s not an inconvenience—that’s a real risk when it comes to managing your finances. Banking here feels like you’re putting your financial well-being in the hands of a system that simply doesn’t respond when you need it most. I have needed a new debit card for years now, but I’ve put it off because I dread having to deal with them over the phone. Email support is hit or miss at best, so neither channel is reliable. My interaction with Angela only made things worse—communication was unproductive, dismissive, and ultimately went nowhere when I needed actual help. After 25+ years as a customer, with the last 10 being especially frustrating and concerning, I’m now being forced to make a change. To be fair, customer support used to be decent years ago. But it has deteriorated so badly that trying to get help now feels like an exercise in self-inflicted frustration. If you value your time, your money, or your sanity, do not rely on this bank for anything important.

I was an almost 30 year client of Meriwest until they upgraded their login system with minimal notification and locked my out of my account. After multiple attempts, I final sent a registered letter to close my account back in March, and have yet to get my money back (now May). They continue to send me e-notices even though I have told them multiple times I can't login (probably telling me about all the fees that they are charging me rather than giving my money back as requested). I suspect I am going to have to get a lawyer involved to get my money back from them. Bottom line: I would bury my money in glass jars in the backyard before I would use Meriwest again. They certainly put profits ahead of customer satisfaction.

If I could give a -10 I would. We have had IBM then Meriwest for over 50 years. The customer service is terrible. After waiting for 45 minutes last week and never getting the escalation callback, I had to wait another 45 minutes today. I cannot log into my on-line account. Their solution - come into a branch. Problem is the closest branch is an eight hour drive. RUN far away from them!
