$2,600 for Five Nights: Urine Smell, No Working AC, and Zero Accountability
I’ve been coming to this Oregon coast town for nearly 30 years and have rented many homes here. I understand that issues can happen in vacation rentals—but what matters is how they are handled. Meredith Lodging has proven that they do not care about their customers experience in their rentals and they are not concerned with correcting a negative experience in order to maintain repeat customers. We paid $2,600 for a five-night stay, and the two biggest issues defined the entire experience: 1. The house smelled of urine From the moment we arrived, the house had a persistent urine odor that never fully went away during our stay. We repeatedly reported it, and while a rug was eventually removed, the smell remained in the home for all five days. It was never properly resolved after several claims that it would be addressed. 2. The advertised AC did not work The house was advertised as having air conditioning, but it did not function at all during a summer stay. Bedrooms reached the high 70s, there wasn’t even a central fan for the HVAC system to circulate air. Opening windows wasn’t realistic due to road noise. When raised, we were told “not all houses have AC,” which is irrelevant—the listing clearly stated this one did. Other issues included: * Couldn’t access the house on arrival due to a non-working door code * Broken toilet seat left in the upstairs bathroom * Multiple service calls required just to get basic issues addressed * Repeated promises of callbacks that never happened * Partial cleaning efforts that did not resolve core problems The Final issue: no follow-through We spent the stay repeatedly calling for help instead of enjoying our vacation. Afterward, I requested a partial refund and was told it was being reviewed. Despite multiple follow-ups over weeks, I received no meaningful response and ultimately $0 in compensation. Bottom line A broken lock or a maintenance issue can be understandable. But: * A house that smells like urine for an entire stay * A non-functioning advertised AC system in summer * And a complete lack of follow-through or accountability afterward is not acceptable for a $2,600 rental. I will not rent from this company again, and I would strongly encourage others to consider alternative options.
