My insurance was denying a CT scan my doctor ordered. Knowing how much it would cost without insurance, there was no way I could pay that and not even have it count against my deductible. I found MDSave while researching self-pay options, and they listed a nearby imaging facility I had used before as a participating provider. I was skeptical that I could get my CT for the very low price quoted, and went to that provider to have them confirm that they accepted MDSave. Neither their front desk people nor the contact at their corporate office seemed to be aware of MDSave at all. I called MDSave and spoke to a woman named Mabel about my experience. She said she would look into it and get back to me. A few days later, she called and told me that that provider was still evaluating whether they would work with MDSave or not, so I probably shouldn't try to use them. Looking at the MDSave website, I found another provider a little further away. I called them and spoke to their billing department, and they assured me that they would do the CT for the amount that MDSave quoted, and that I would receive no other bill. I made an appointment there for just a couple days later. When I checked in, the provider already had the paperwork from MDSave, although there was a little communication confusion, as they worked through the affiliated Care Connect. After the CT, I waited to ensure that I would receive no additional bill from the facility, technician, radiologist, etc., and I have not. The CT actually cost me less than one-fourth what a simple ultrasound cost me at my regular insurer's contracted rate. As it turned out, my insurance later accepted my appeal and approved the CT, but I saved over $2,000 by having used MDSave beforehand.
