You get what you pay for, maybe ...
Great on the phone. Then the silence starts. MBTek’s salespeople are excellent at one thing: sounding great on the phone. They promise dates, then fail to follow up. Over and over. I ordered a heat pump and a custom 175-gallon buffer tank in July 2026. The heat pump arrived well packed, but nearly every spec I was given turned out to be wrong, and getting straight answers was a fight. The numbers kept changing. Flow rate: I was told 13 GPM, by phone and in writing. The nameplate and MBTek’s own manual both say 8.0 GPM. That number sizes the circulator for the whole system, so I could have bought the wrong pump. Dimensions and weight: the website lists 50.5" x 20.3" x 43.9" and 245 lb. The nameplate says about 46" x 17.9" x 37.4" and 231.5 lb. I had to question the crate dimensions before anyone looked into it. Tank material: the 175-gallon tank’s inner material was stainless, then galvanized with an anode, then stainless again, all in writing from their team. I’m still waiting for final written confirmation. Tank delivery: ordered July 16 with a two-month lead time, which I was fine with. Then four weeks by phone in early August, two months in writing on Aug 19, and “another 6-8 weeks” in mid-September. Those can’t all be true, and nobody ever explained the changes. The tank will now arrive in the middle of winter, if it arrives, and shipping costs have climbed since it was supposed to ship. The delay hurts my chances of getting this system running before real winter, which means buying more heating oil. We all know what fuel prices are doing. Why I don’t trust the warranty. They threw in a “free” extended warranty with a hard-sell purchase. When the basic specs keep changing and simple questions go unanswered, how much faith do I have that it will be honored? None. Good thing it was free. Communication. Emails went unanswered for days or weeks, including questions about electrical sizing and warranty that I needed answered before installing. “24-48 hours” meant five days. Parts were missing from the shipment. Even a one-line “got your email, will get back to you” would have been enough. Instead, in answer to written safety questions, I got “try to relax, give us some trust.” A note on the rebadging. Owners on r/heatpumps and r/hvacadvice widely say MBTek’s Apollo units are rebadged Chinese hardware, reportedly from PHNIX. I can’t verify the maker myself, and I don’t mind rebadging. Plenty of companies do it. But if you’re buying a rebadged import, you’re really buying the reseller’s support and honesty about what you’re getting, and that is where MBTek falls short. I read the bad reviews first and thought maybe those people caught them on a bad day. No. They live up to the reviews. It’s a steady “we don’t care once we have your money” vibe. Some people in logistics are helpful and proactive, if you can get them to respond. But even they promise specific dates and then go quiet. Most of the company seems to have trained at the April Ludgate school of customer service. It wouldn’t take much to fix: answer emails, give honest dates, make the specs match the product. They just can’t be bothered. Buyer beware. You get what you pay for. (although I'm not yet sure about getting my tank .. they still haven't responded or updated me on its status). I keep dated records of every call and email, and I’m happy to share them.
