Maven Needs Many Improvements
1) Maven’s payment system is ridiculous. I made sure to be 5 minutes (plus) early for the consultation. We rapped up at the end of the hour and must have clocked off 1 minute early, so I was paid for 59 minutes. I don’t care about the money. It was totally disrespectful of my contributions and not in line with industry standards. 2) I’m semi-retired, teach and still work as a lawyer. Frequently I’m turned down for consulting opportunities because I check a box stating I don’t work full time. I wouldn’t have taken most of those consultations while working full time. Many of those opportunities are in areas where I’m an expert. Moreover, because of this happening multiple times, I frequently ignore Maven emails. 3) I don’t want electronic gift cards, so I consider your payment options ridiculous. Just send me a check of pay via Venmo without a deduction. 4) If you want me to watch a video or read detailed instructions, then pay for my time. As you can see from the Maven response, they aren’t interested in constructive criticism and are more interested in defending ridiculous policies. For example, they point to their ridiculous small print instead of fixing a ridiculous to the minute payment policy.
Response from Maven ResearchAug 22, 2026
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and for the time and expertise you’ve contributed to Maven. We want to clarify a few points you raised. For consultations, Maven’s compensation is based on the agreed-upon hourly rate and the actual duration of the consultation, calculated to the minute. This is outlined in our Payment Policy, so a consultation lasting 59 minutes is compensated accordingly. We understand your perspective on the one-minute difference and appreciate you sharing that experience. The consulting video you referenced is Maven’s annual Consulting Orientation. It is a standard requirement for consultants in our community and is intended to ensure participants are up to date on current guidelines, expectations, and best practices for consulting through Maven. Regarding eligibility, each research project has specific criteria established based on the needs of the client and study. Current employment status can be one of those criteria, even when someone has significant experience in the relevant field. We recognize that this can mean some opportunities are not a fit for experienced professionals who are semi-retired or working part-time, and we appreciate your feedback on this. Maven also offers specific payment methods for completed participation. We recognize that payment preferences vary, and we understand that our available options may not be your preferred method. We value the expertise that professionals like you bring to Maven and appreciate the candid feedback. It helps us identify where we can make the experience clearer and more useful for our community.
