My family has had a very bad experience with Sparx. My 14 year old son has been using this service as homework and independent learning. He has had to see a therapist because of Sparx. Why do you even have bookwork checks when this is worked out on a calculator? What is up with perfection? It seems like this company promotes perfectionism, which seems ultimately wrong. Aren't you supposed to learn from your mistakes. DON'T USE SPARX, FIND A DIFFERENT LEARNING PROGRAM LIKE CENTURY TECH.

Terrible. Doesn't work, really bad, so boring, so unnecessary, the videos are completely unrelated to the question, the narrators sound as though they haven't slept for 40 years, so sluggish and boring, bookworks are completely and utterly useless, my classmates just stopped doing their homework, my teacher stopped checking after a while. Teachers, stop wasting your time and money it isn't worth it at all.

This website is mental abuse to students. That's it, For those people who don't really know what SparX is, it is a website (I think there is also an app version but I'm not 100% sure) where students get maths questions and have to answer them. This could either be set as homework from a teacher, or self learning. In addition, it has features like bookwork checks, and video help (both of which i will get into more detail later). Here are the reasons it is such a terrible learning tool: Firstly, for most people you have to get 100% to not get a detention for not doing it completely. However, it can be very challenging at some points, not in a beneficial way though. This is because some of the questions can be worded very strangely ,and the usual teenage brain is fried from at least 10 minutes of work. The cause of this is the repetitive boring tasks it makes you do. Personally, i think that it should include a variety of ways to learn, or to complete your homework that can be easy or hard . This would be amazing because the students that are struggling can get that 100%. However, some of you may be wondering: "Olivia how on Earth are they going to do that? It's not like they can use magic to make the average student understand and enjoy using the website." Well, for example, websites like Quizlet have different ways to learn and activities to to do like: matching, flashcards, a learn feature, and even a rip of BlockBlast. This would remove the repetitive and difficult aspect of the tasks. Secondly, don't even get me started on the frustrating features of "BookWork Check" ,"Video Help" ,and "Changing question". The first feature I would like to discuss is the bookwork check. Let's be real who is writing the answers. Just a few months ago, I had to do my homework ,and being the perfectionist I am found it very frustrating to see an awful book work score. Additionally, this is the year 2025, we aren't in the Victorian Era writing out answers. Are we? It is pointless. It is rubbish. It is frustrating. Another feature, is the videos that show you how to complete a question. There is like a 1 in 29,876 chance it is actually helpful. It feels like the person explaining is blabbing on about nonsense in a way you can't understand. Also, it doesn't help that the question they are doing is different to your question ,which makes it 10x more difficult to understand. To fix this, they should add a hint button, where it tells you what to do or what you got wrong. Instead of when you answer incorrectly it doesn't give you a reason why. Through experience, I have had a variety of crash outs because I couldn't get to the bottom of my problems. To make it worse, it resets your question after 3 incorrect answers(it used to be 2 ,but they added 1 more try)meaning that all your working out is wasted. Thank you, to those who read or are talking about this matter. To make it clear I have to use the .co.uk version which doesn't have any differences from the .com version apart from the website link.

Sparx Maths was honestly one of the worst parts of my entire school week. The tasks took hours and felt never-ending, piling on extra stress when I already had other homework to do. The so-called video help did nothing to make things clearer — half the time it just repeated what I already didn’t understand. If you got one question wrong, you’d end up stuck redoing more work instead of actually learning where you went wrong. It made me do my pieces every single time I had to sit down and tackle it. I dreaded it every week and never once looked forward to doing Sparx tasks — they felt like mindless busywork just for the sake of ticking a box. I honestly don’t think it gave me any real advantage for my Maths GCSE either — it just ate up time I could have spent revising properly or getting actual help from a teacher. In the end, Sparx Maths feels like a complete waste of money for schools. That money could be spent on better resources, real tutoring, or anything that genuinely supports students instead of draining them. If you’re a parent, student, or teacher considering this — do yourself a favour and look for something that actually makes learning worthwhile.
