Good while it ran, but the Washington setup was wrong and the exit was rough
I used Lettuce for about 18 months as a solo consultant. They handled the S-corp setup, ran monthly payroll, and filed my 2024 and 2025 business and personal returns. That part worked, and it's why this isn't a one-star review. For $299/month, though, I expected the state-level details to be right, and they weren't. I'm in Washington. Lettuce enrolled me in Paid Family & Medical Leave and WA Cares and withheld premiums from my pay. I've since confirmed with the Employment Security Department that as the sole governing member of an LLC, I was exempt from both the entire time. I also had a permanent WA Cares exemption on file since 2021. Lettuce's own filings list me as "WA Cares Exempt Employee: No." Nobody ever asked. When Washington started taxing software development services in 2025, I asked whether it applied to me. The answer I got back was a sentence that didn't parse. I followed up asking how to collect and remit it. Nobody ever replied. The offboarding was the worst part. Lettuce runs payroll through Gusto, which I never set up and had no relationship with. When I cancelled, they disconnected the Gusto link and told me my Gusto account had been closed. It wasn't. Gusto kept billing me and tried to debit my account three months later. Meanwhile Gusto sent "action required immediately" notices about filings that failed while I was still a paying Lettuce customer, and Lettuce told me to take it up with Gusto directly. If you're considering Lettuce, ask specifically how they handle your state's payroll rules, and ask what happens to the Gusto account when you leave. Those are the two things I wish I'd asked.

Hi Steve, thank you for the honest feedback. We're glad the core service worked for you, and we're sorry the state-specific details and the offboarding didn't. We take this seriously and are actively looking into how we can better support customers with Washington state tax obligations. We're also reviewing our offboarding process with Gusto. – The Lettuce team
