OutsetReviews of joinoutset.com

I did Outset at UCLA this summer. The campus, counselors, fellow campers, and educators were amazing. The activities we did, both academic and for fun, were engaging and felt fulfilling! I do think that the promotion was a bit misleading in terms of how much hands-on/lab skills I thought we would be practicing. The majority of the academics were lectures. Which was ok and engaging, just not what I thought it would be. Overall, definitely worth it for the experience and people I met!

Our son had a good experience with the Outset program. This was his first time doing a medical program like this, so his expectations were high. It was a very relaxed type of a program. though. It was student led and had a few hands-on things to do. he thought there would be more educational speakers too. He did enjoy all the fun activities they did as well! He shared daily things they did but not much in-depth detail like us parents would have loved to hear. We saw 4 pictures that he was posted in, and most were of having fun or standing in front of a sign. I think for the price we paid for this, I wanted to see him in pictures involved in these hands-on mock trials and knowing that he actually participated in this. Many pictures were posted of the girls though! He did make friends and said that everyone was very nice. (And the food was very good as well)

super immersive! i truly had so much fun making friends and learning from medical professionals. a bit pricey, but would recommend to other friends for sure

I had done the emergency medicine camp at Columbia University, which I was interested in touring and experiencing. Overall the program was great; for someone who has little experience, I was able to learn basic suturing, lumbar punctures, and intubation. Besides that, the lectures focused on pre-med pathways and careers were a little less engaging and insightful. They were frequently redundant and included information that is easily accessible online. Despite this, the person giving these lectures was one of the leaders of pre-health guidance at NYU, so we could get good insight about how to structure your years and plan your future. This camp is overall a pretty good program, the lectures were primarily good because of who gave them, but the simulations were good for beginners who have little experience with medicine! Additionally, it’s nice because everything is already paid for with the tuition, even transportation.

My rising senior went the the general surgery program at Vanderbilt University this past week. She traveled by plane from Alaska and the airport pick up and drop off were well organized and right on time. She enjoyed making new friends and experiencing dorm life for the first time. She complained about the lengthy lectures, felt like she wanted more time doing hands on things. I was hoping there was more opportunities for actual shadowing but everything was simulated. I think she really loved suturing and getting to see the campus and also Belmont College. I think it was the perfect amount of time to be away. The communication from the program and the photos they sent were really great and much appreciated.

I was in general medicine and I found the program very enlightening. I was relatively unsure about medicine beforehand, but hearing from people in the field as well as current students was pretty useful. However, in my opinion, the best part of the program (at unc at least) was going to the simulation lab, particularly learning how to speak to patients and practicing on patient actors. The order and organization of topics that we had lectures on was also very intuitive and flowed really well. My only gripe was that some parts of the presentations were slightly rushed for the sake of time, but that’s understandable.

My son attended UNC in early July. While the experience was way out of his comfort zone, it was a pleasant one for the most part. The weather put a damper on the first day or two but that was not preventable. I am glad that he enjoyed the speakers and the activities. Based on our conversations, the experience was very thought provoking and he is aware of what perusing a career in medicine is going to require.

Very great way to get the experience and feel of what college will be like and if the college is a fit for you. There was limited freedom but overall it was very fun and a good way to get insights on the student life on a college campus while also learning about what I would want to major in.
