Where to publish first
As someone who self-publishes (five times), I am still a little confused as to the best sequence to buy an ISBN and on which platform to publish. After buying an ISBN for may latest book from you, I went to B&N first, since it tells me the minimum price that I can charge for the book. Then I had to go back and figure out how to change the price on your site, at which time I learned that I could just got to B&N first and skip your site, because B&N references Bowker. All of this would have been good to know before I started.

All great except I don't know how to import the ISBN onto my copy. Pls make it a separate attachment? PamS

Hi Pam! Guy from ISBNdirect here 👋🏻 Thank you for your review. You can download the barcode for your ISBN on the ISBNs page in your account. Just click the barcode icon on the far right of your ISBN's row and save the file to place on your back cover. If you're publishing a paperback on Amazon KDP, you don't need to add it yourself. KDP places the barcode on your cover automatically once you enter the ISBN. If you meant something else, send us a message through the help widget in your account and we'll help you out.

I wish I had known that I didn't need an ISBN for an e-book.

Hi Alice! Guy from ISBNdirect here 👋🏻 It sounds like the platform you published on didn't require one, which happens. It varies, some platforms let you publish an ebook without an ISBN, others require it. That's a good reason for us to add a knowledge base article explaining how the requirements differ per platform, so others know what to look for. It's live now. Thanks for flagging it, Alice.

I love how easy it is setting up
I love how easy it is setting up. However, I didn't see the best genre section for mine so had to go with closest. Other than that price isn't bad, easy to set up and get going, downloaded bar code also looked great as well on downloaded and pasted to documents. Also like the option to pay extra for marketing and that isn't a bad price either.

The genres are set by Bowker (the national ISBN agency), so we can’t add custom ones, but I agree some books don’t fit perfectly.
