Don’t waste your time registering with these guys if you are not resident in the US. They refused to allow me to place a USD$800 bid until I’d placed a USD$5000 deposit with them. This applies to non-US residents for some auctions and it’s not disclosed until you have already given your identity documents and credit card details.

Thank you for your feedback. We welcome bidders from around the world, and we understand your frustration with being asked to provide a $5,000 deposit to bid on this lot.
Certain auctions have additional deposit requirements for international bidders. We agree that any required deposit should be clearly disclosed so clients understand the requirements before completing the qualification process.
We appreciate you bringing this experience to our attention.

You’re better off doing an auction on…
You’re better off doing an auction on eBay yourself, they’re dismissive and annoying to deal with, some of it was okay but most of it was bs and not worth it

Wouldn't use again
First of all, Alissa was very accommodating and easy to work with. I appreciate her offering a competitive commission and doing what she could to get the painting to Texas. None of my following criticisms have anything to do with her.
However, given the poor result of the sale, I would never place another piece of fine art at Heritage (maybe a Star Wars doll or a comic book). I've only ever made money on the paintings I deal with and I lost on this one for no good reason. This painting had everything going for it and it failed at Heritage - in the artist's hometown, no less. The most page views, the most saves (except for one other painting), one of the best-looking Bates to hit the market... yet Heritage buyers couldn't see it. Perhaps they're too much speculators and don't have the same clout as those in NYC where I usually sell my American art. I don't know, but watching the painting sell for what it did was a total head-scratcher.
Finally, I would question why there was an auctioneer change on such a short auction and I'll leave it at that.
Sorry if that's a bit of a harsh review, but you asked for my honest opinion and that's the way I see it.

We are very sorry to read of your disappointment. One of our primary goals at Heritage is to provide an excellent consignor experience from start to finish, so we truly regret that you were not fully satisfied with the outcome.
That said, we are delighted to hear that your experience working with Alissa was a positive one.
With respect to the final result, it is important to remember that the market ultimately determines value. In this case, the work significantly exceeded expectations, selling for $112,500 against a pre-sale estimate of $50,000–70,000. As Heritage currently holds the auction record for David Bates, we are deeply familiar with the artist’s market and work very hard to position these works successfully.
The painting received substantial exposure and bidder engagement throughout the process, including 1,898 views on HA.com alone (not including third-party platforms), and participation from 21 bidders during the auction.
We certainly understand that expectations and outcomes do not always align, but objectively the result represented a very strong market performance.
We always value client feedback and are continually striving to improve. Should you wish to discuss the matter further, we would welcome the opportunity to speak with you directly.
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts.

Risky business - a gamble with your personal data
Risky business - a gamble with your personal data
Please think before you register to bid with this auction house. They request the following highly sensitive data that as a whole, leaves you open to great personal risk: Name, birth year, photo of driver's license or passport, last 4 digits of your social security number, bank name, and more. They will say it is for their protection, but should there be a data breach you will be screwed. This is a serious overreach by Heritage Auctions and my husband (who is an attorney) and I refuse to provide our sensitive personal data in bulk to this company.
1/26/26: Thank you Heritage Auction for your thoughtful reply today. I am a registered member/buyer of many different auction houses and none of them have anywhere near this level of authentication to be able to bid, including very high end auctions. It's simply safer to shop elsewhere.

Thank you for your feedback. We understand that data privacy is an important concern. Like other major auction houses, Heritage Auctions uses enhanced verification measures for some new bidders as part of our security and compliance efforts. These requirements help protect all participants and the integrity of our auctions. We do not collect or use this information without your consent, and our Privacy Policy—detailing how information is handled and protected—can be found on our website.

Increasingly poor customer service and escalating fees.
I've bought from Heritage Auctions for the past few years, but the service is getting worse. It can take days and multiple attempts to get a reply to an email. The items that used to be dispatched within a few days, now take weeks to be dispatched. Meanwhile the fees keep increasing as the customer experience declines rapidly.

Disappointing
If the object is not of interest to them, they answer you by saying they sell it on eBay, without giving you any evaluation.
I had asked for an assessment of different types of objects in each request that I sent, but it was not considered, they probably use automatic emails.
This is not very professional.
Update: Some objects need an evaluation before being sold on eBay. On eBay, everyone does their price, there are expert sellers in the field of what they sell and there are scammers. There are people who sell coins for a minting error that does not exist for 2000 € !! . I did not send you coins, I sent you objects to which you could give an approximate estimate, but since it was not of your interest you did not consider the idea of helping me.

Riccardo,
We're sorry your experience didn't meet your expectations. While we do sometimes refer customers to eBay for items we're unable to appraise or handle, each request deserves careful attention, and we regret if that wasn't clearly communicated. We'd appreciate the opportunity to address your inquiries more specifically—please feel free to reach out again, and we'd be happy to thoroughly review any additional items or details you'd like us to assess.

They are a legitimate platform but…
They are a legitimate platform but their shipping times have become absolutely absurd. Will be 6 weeks post payment, MINIMUM, before they ship your items. Note that is not accounting for shipping time. I frequent multiple auctioneer platforms and none are as slow as HA
