GovSwift’s Business Practices are Misleading and Predatory
GovSwift’s business practices are misleading and predatory. I found the site after Googling “passport renewal application” and believed I was completing the passport application process. My Google history confirms that search was immediately followed by my visit to GovSwift. The application took me approximately 5 minutes to complete, and I was charged $150.95. Only afterward did I realize this was solely GovSwift’s third-party document-preparation fee and that I still had to pay the actual government passport fees separately. I didn’t see this fine print anywhere, nor is it listed on their website. What makes this especially confusing is that GovSwift’s $150.95 fee is over 90% of the entire $165 in government fees for a first-time adult passport book ($130 + $35). I would never knowingly pay nearly the cost of the passport itself simply to have a third party prepare forms that are available free from the government and only took me a few minutes to complete. I contacted GovSwift almost immediately, while the charge was still pending, and requested cancellation and a full refund. They refused and offered only a 25% refund. I’m also extremely concerned that I provided my daughter’s Social Security number and other sensitive personal information during this process. My advice: go directly through the U.S. Department of State. I would not recommend this service and if you’ve had a similar experience, don’t just write a review. Document everything and file complaints with the FTC, your state Attorney General’s consumer protection office, and the BBB. The more consumers report experiences like this, the more likely these business practices are to receive appropriate scrutiny. UPDATE: After initially offering me a 25% refund, GovSwift increased its offer to 50% and ultimately to 75% ($113), which I have now accepted simply because I wanted to put this matter behind me. GovSwift has confirmed that the refund has been processed. I appreciate receiving 75% of my money back, but the refund does not change my opinion of the experience or the concerns raised in this review. I am still out $37.95 for a service I would never have knowingly purchased had I understood what I was paying for. More importantly, because my daughter’s Social Security number was submitted through this process, I have also had to take additional precautions to protect her identity and credit. GovSwift has told me that our information was deleted, however our family lawyer has advised that I obtain written confirmation that her Social Security number itself has been permanently deleted and is no longer accessible, retained or sold to a third party. I have requested this from GovSwift. At this point, it’s not even about the $37.95. It’s about trust. When a company operates in a way that I found this misleading over a simple passport application, it makes me question what else I should be concerned about, especially when they’re collecting Social Security numbers and other highly sensitive personal information. GovSwift has asked me to update my Trustpilot review and rating to reflect the outcome. I am updating my review to accurately acknowledge the 75% refund. However, my original review and rating stand.

Thank you for sharing this detailed update. For clarification, our company operates as an independent, private, third-party service that helps customers complete their passport applications accurately and efficiently. We clearly state on our website that we are not affiliated with the government and do not submit applications on behalf of customers. We also specify that government fees are paid separately to the issuing agency. Our service provides guided support via email text and phone, and completed forms to help ensure applications are correct. While some customers choose to complete the process independently, others prefer additional support. Protecting our customers’ personal information is something we take very seriously. Information submitted through our service is handled in accordance with our privacy and security practices and is used only as necessary to provide the requested service. We are glad we were able to process your refund as well as the data deletion request and appreciate your feedback.
