Frequent technical issues that proctors refuse to troubleshoot
Proctoring is necessary for online testing, but ProctorU is absolutely terrible. I'm not sure how they choose their proctors, but many don't seem to know what they are doing. The very first time I used ProctorU for a test, my proctor never turned off his mic after I began, and I could hear his kids being loud in the background, and him talking to someone and laughing during my entire test! Since then I have ran into frequent technical issues. I had zero issues until one week the proctor suddenly couldn't remote into my computer. I had to switch between several proctors and this took over an hour and I almost missed my testing window. The last one I finally got simply sent me a pop up to "accept" her being able to remotely control my computer. The other proctors either didn't know how or didn't think to do this. Last week I took a quiz and again, the proctor could not remote into my computer. I asked specifically for the pop up so I could allow access, but received a canned response of "I am unable to remote into your computer. As a courtesy we will transfer you over to a support technician." Well, I was transferred between 5 or 6 different proctors over the course of TWO HOURS past my scheduled testing time. Again, I was about to actually run out of time to complete my test before it closed, and I became extremely stressed. The final proctor that connected to me asked what the issues had been, and when I told her she said it was an easy fix and next thing I knew, she was controlling my computer! It's as if the proctors are paid based on the number of tests they can proctor at any given time and therefore they will give up and "transfer" you over at the slightest technology hiccup. Most of them don't do anything to try to troubleshoot the problem! For a quiz that I was given 45 minutes to complete, I had only 15 minutes to take by the time I started 2 hours after the scheduled time. That is unacceptable! This is not an issue of poor time management on students' part. If we schedule a test at a certain time, it should not take hours to be able to actually take said test! ProctorU needs better training for their proctors, because these issues are far too common and negatively impact test takers.
