It's crazy that they can't provide my billing statement for more than 18 months. Every other utility I pay can go back as far as my account goes.
Not to mention the complete garbage communication they have when you power is out and the sky high prices

Georgia Power (GP) SCAMS
@Consumers, @InvestigativeJournalists: Dangerous, Unlawful Shut-Offs and Phantom Debt Traps -
Georgia Power (GP) is operating an unlawful, closed-loop debt collection trap that prioritizes algorithmic extraction over human life and state law. If you have suffered grief and loss of a deceased relative or are trying to dispute bills, be warned: their systems are designed to coerce, abuse & deceive.
Following the death of a family member, GP explicitly refused to transfer services or start a new account for basic utility service. Instead, they asserted that nonresidents first settle a disputed, unvalidated debt of more than $575—a fabricated charge that my dying loved one spent their last moments in the ICU worrying about. The debt was ultimately paid under duress just to keep the lights on, as transition into the house occurred under the hope and prayer the dying would live to come home. This was not the case. GP not only refused new service, they unlawfully claimed "no dispute method" exist, that consumers cannot dispute their bills. Our consumer rights, federal and state law mandate otherwise. Continuing to sit in the deceased loved one's account, while going through repeated predatory and unlawful practices is ongoing to date. Refunds have been requested repeatedly for more than a year, all while two additional bogus, mathematically impossible bills for over $500 each rolled in.
Instead of resolving their outdated SmartMeter hardware and dual-meter data dumping glitch, GP forced the deceased loved one's account from post-pay into a punitive PrePay structure. Customer Service representatives (CSRs) actively tell consumers this PrePay method is the only option they offer for the payment of unvalidated and innacurate debt, an extortion tactic that remains an active practice.
Their automated system now mandates a 25% garnishment on all emergency funds deposited, holding basic electricity hostage. Worse, they execute sudden, automated power shut-offs without the legally required 5-day written notice. For instance, in July 2026, their system unlawfully cut power on a Saturday, and again during an active National Weather Service Heat Advisory—a direct violation of GA Public Service Commission (GA PSC) regulations protecting vulnerable citizens.
This systemic coercion culminates in outright extortion. CSRs flatly refuse to establish basic, brand-new utility service until an individual consumer—rather than the deceased’s estate—personally pays off a mathematically impossible, unvalidated phantom bill.
To obscure the financial trail, GP routes payments through third-party vendors like Vanilla Direct, intentionally misclassifying electronic card payments as "cash" to strip consumers of standard dispute rights. These vendor pipelines are plagued by lax cybersecurity protocols and a history of data breaches, consistently failing SLAs and mandatory SOX audit standards. Yet, GP CSRs coerce consumers into uploading highly sensitive PII and probate documents—such as death certificates—directly into these vulnerable pipelines while refusing new service.
@GP: Where is the vendor risk oversight? Are they performing risk assessments? Communicating security events? When and how are consumers being notified that their sensitive documents are being fed into unsecured systems? Why did you not notify of the BillMatrix data breach? Are you aware of the current massive litigation against your vendors?
The utility and its vendors would do well to remember that under the Georgia Fair Business Practices Act, demanding treble (triple) damages is not a far-fetched dream—it is a statutory mandate for intentional, deceptive corporate misconduct. Channel 2 News & GA PSC were copied in correspondence, a complaint now exist with GA PSC.
@Georgia Power: As stated over a year ago, when we come, we come correct. Your fabricated, ridiculous bill should never have been a burden placed on a frail, vulnerable human being fighting for their life in an ICU bed.

Lawless, unjust, Ripoff America
This company is definitely a heartless rip off entity . They over charge you, talk to you reckless then refer you to places that have no funds for assistance. Prepay is another ripoff you make daily or day-to-day payments. Part going to your balance you owe, then when you do finish paying that. They slap on $150 deposit on you. This world careless about your mental or physical health. Miss that arrangement you cut off. Just like that. May they reap what they saw in Jesus Christ name.

I am extremely disappointed with… Georgia Power
I am extremely disappointed with Georgia Power Company and the ongoing issues I have experienced with their billing department and customer service staff. My experience has been frustrating from start to finish.
Within a span of just three months, I had two separate payments withdrawn from my account even though I never set up auto pay. Each time I was told that auto pay was active, which I personally did not set up. I then had to go through the process of canceling something I never authorized in the first place, which should not have been necessary.
To make matters worse, my account had a zero balance when the second payments were taken. There was no reason for any additional charge, yet the payment was still processed. Even after their error, I was charged a $30 fee. Being charged fees for mistakes made on their end is completely unacceptable.
The lack of accountability and poor communication has made this an ongoing headache. It feels like customers are left to deal with repeated errors without real resolution or care.
I strongly recommend avoiding this company if you have any other option available in your area. The stress, time, and money spent trying to correct their mistakes is simply not worth it.

Abusive & Predatory
If I could leave zero stars, I would. I just moved into a 2,300 sq ft home serviced by Georgia Power, and my electricity bill has been nearly $800/month—for just two people living in the house. We already keep our thermostat at 76°F, we’re mindful of our usage, and we aren’t running anything excessive.
When I called customer service for help, I was told the following:
- I should keep my thermostat between 78–80°F at all times (in Georgia heat?!)
- I need to unplug everything from the wall if it’s not in use (seriously?)
- I should keep all the windows covered with blackout curtains during both summer and winter
- And that I basically need to live in the dark to lower my bill
Excuse me???
This is dystopian. I should not be expected to live like a vampire in a sweat lodge just to afford power in a home that isn't even that large. The fact that this is considered “normal” by Georgia Power is beyond concerning and the best they could tell me was "keep your home at 80 degrees".
Meanwhile, friends of mine in other parts of Georgia—with bigger homes and dual AC units—are paying 60-80% less than half of what I am through co-ops or EMCs. Georgia Power has a monopoly on certain areas, and they are abusing it with out-of-touch rate hikes and gaslighting customer service.
Horribly broken system absolutely abusing it's power and residents.
