The slight tackiness you feel is pure lanolin; very nurturing for the skin and it makes the ear plug (soft and mouldable), keeps it securely in your ear and helps it block out more sound that any other earplug in the world! Mighty Plugs are " Real" Ear Plugs that "do the job"; whereas Foam Ear Plugs are inexpensive ear plug imitations that are supposed "expand" and block out.????? Dear James: They will BLOCK OUT as advertised and as the authentic testimonials have reported. This is an EASY FIX! We've sent you the HIGHEST BLOCKING Ear Plugs (( IN THE WORLD ))! James, Please follow the below instructions (exactly), and you'll completely change your thinking and possibly be grateful for my effort and instructions: 1. First take ONE ear plug at a time, and (knead or work) it well through your fingers or hands for 15-20 seconds, to make the ear plug (soft and mouldable). Then follow the directions in # 2 2. Push and flatten the softened ear plug, (a bit firmly), IN and AGAINST your ear opening & into your ear canal UNTIL YOU FEEL the ear plug ( SEAL ) your ear canal. YES, It needs to SEAL the ear to block out much. IMPORTANT: If the ear plug doesn't (( SEAL )) immediately, then just keep your finger pressed against it with slight pressure for a few more seconds and it will warm and SEAL PERFECTLY. 3. Now take the other ear plug, and prepare it and insert it (exactly) the same way as the first ear plug. James, now with both ears SEALED, LISTEN TO (( SILENCE )) !!!!!! OK, now put in the FOAM and hope they EXPAND & Block out. James, if you can't tell the difference, then you haven't inserted our ear plugs to where they SEAL your ears.
