This company USED to be good. I would buy housewares and accessories from them all the time and everything was fine but recently their quality has taken a sharp decline. I gave it three starts because a long time ago, I would have given it 5 but because of the way things have been going because of them...

jBeautiful, but . . .
just picked up a beautiful fireplace screen in pewter. I had already read the reviews and was advised that this was very simple to assemble because it involved simply attaching the two feet at the bottom with two screws. Well, I got my lovely screen today. I went to put the two feet on with the two screws (one screw per foot) and discovered to my horror that this was one of the more complicated assemblies I have ever faced (and I put together a LOT of furniture. The problems included: (1) the holes for the screws were not circular! There was metal material in one of the screw holes which did not permit the screw to turn in the hole. I had to "ream" the hole to fit the screw. (2) One of the screws was rusted, so I had to oil it in order for it to turn in the hole (once reamed). (3) The holes for the screws were so close to the body of the screen, it was almost impossible to turn the screws into the feet. Most significantly, (4) I was not provided an Allen wrench for the holes in the screws (why weren't they just phillips head screws???). The instructions said that an Allen wrench was included, but the box with the two feet said that it only contained the two feet with two screws. No Allen wrench. Well, that's okay because I have a zillion Allen wrenches, so I assumed that this would not be a problem. Of course, not a single one fit the rather large opening. Either my Allen wrenches were too large or too small. So I ended up using a pliers to try to turn the screws. It was ridiculously difficult for two little screws. I still gave this screen a 3 rating because it really is beautiful, despite the fact that the feet are not tightly screwed in and are therefore a little bit wobbly and because of how difficult assembly turned out to be.

I didn't know about these recent…
I didn't know about these recent negative reviews here, but I heard about this website from my friend in college and used it. They have some refer a friend program...or smth so we both got pleasant bonuses :) Nevertheless, my essay was well-written, and I cared to read it actually before submitting ot make sure it sounds right. Had my B grade which I am more than happy with. This company delivers

Failure to communicate
Placed an order $280 plus, on April 20th. Credit card was charged on April 21st. We have received two emails from C&B. One confirming our purchase of the items one day after placing the order. (all items were showing in stock). A second email arrived 7 days later with the headline "We're almost there" and the link takes you into an order # and email input screen, once you provide the details it states "Preparing to Ship" It is now 14 days later, no further communication, a busy signal when you call their 800 number, so forget trying to talk to a live body. The link from the second email still says "Preparing to Ship".
The first tenet and lesson of customer service is to "under promise and over deliver". Crate & Barrel, and their leadership must have skipped class that day.
Update: We were finally able to get through on the tool free customer service line. We had leave our name and number, however several hours later a very kind customer service individual returned our call. They checked into the order, made a request to the distribution facility, and we were advised it would ship and received confirmation the next day.
The items arrived today, 5-7, packed perfectly, and nothing (dishes) were damaged in shipping. Kudos to C&B customer service for calling back, being proactive in requesting our order be shipped, and to those who packed it for doing an excellent job.

Beautiful Design Furniture - Horrible Delivery Service
I spent over $5000 in furniture.
I walked away from the San Jose store after waiting for 80 minutes because I couldn't get any associate to help me. I ended up ordering my furniture on-line.
I was walking away from the Palo Alto store after waiting an hour because I couldn't get any associate to help me, not until a VERY NICE and HELPFUL associate stopped me and helped me. I added more furniture to my purchased.
My furniture was delivered on a drizzling rainy day. The two man were very unprofessional. They didn't cover their walk path so my carpet ended up with water/mud stained. They did not covered their shoes with protective booties. They did not covered my furniture from the rain nor care to dry it. They literally dumped my furniture wet. They dumped my ottoman in the middle of my living room and asked me to picked it up.... ... etc. etc. etc.
Yes their furniture is pricey, but they are beautiful designed. I loved shopping at Crater & Barrel. I am really disappointed with their choice for their Delivery service company.
I could have giving them 5 stars for Furniture Design.
I give them 3 stars for their Service.
I could have giving them 0 star for their Delivery Service.

Good furniture, high prices
I like the furniture at Crate & Barrel. I'm not thrilled with the prices, though. It seems that everything here is a bit overpriced. Still, it is a fun place to shop and the salespeople at my local store are all friendly and helpful. Maybe it's the perfect place to pick out those special, one-of-a-kind items. Buy your more common household goods at a less expensive retailer.
