never thought dealing with an actual insurance company would be easier than trying to get help from covered California! Was automatically put in a medi-cal bucket even though I wanted to pay for actual insurance coverage. There is noting online except for a form to contest it and the woman who answered my phone call did not listen and was very rude and never gave me a straight answer on HOW to resolve this. Ended up calling the insurance company directly and they were really helpful.

Good customer service !!
I am going to give 4 stars to covered California mainly because every time I have ever called them, I have rarely had to wait more than 5 minutes and the customer service is generally very friendly and helpful.

Covered California issues are epic, poor communication and database unity
Covered California and Medi-Cal need to work together, they don't!
Medi-Cal is the top agency they should be on their game to communicate to Covered California and Covered California back to Medic-cal, but NO, these two arms left and right don't communicate with one another and they both do a horrible job together.
What do I mean?
1. My spouse and my income does NOT qualify for Medi-Cal after we married as combined income.
2. Covered California said we did qualify for Medi-Cal, Medi-Cal said we didn't
3. Next we updated ALL hers and my income in BOTH portals
4. Covered California has a set income once and forget it meaning you can't make changes even if typos. It's pretty bad and silly not to be able to make changes even if have typos once you click enter. It's a serious headache to fix anything!
5. CCA flagged us for Medi-Cal even though it was a income typo.
6. Had to go to Medi-Cal and say no we do not qualify for this at all and show them income. They AGREED. But then forgot to update the documents that go to Covered California to "remove" this from my spouse's old portal.
7. 30-April, Covered California sends me a notice saying we are getting Medi-Cal (no we are not) AND Covered California (we only had this for MONTHS now) but CCA sent us a note saying we will owe if Medi-Cal doesn't remove us. WHAT?!?!
8. We don't work for the county! Why are we micro-managing other's jobs who didn't update the portals after receiving the updated income verification??
WHY is this our fault to update the paperwork??
We aren't scamming we told Medi-Cal spouse does NOT qualify. We submitted the income docs to prove it.
9. Now Covered California who got the updates is telling us we should cancel Medi-Cal? WHY? We never qualified for 2026 as a married couple!!
They are all incompetent.
This is a sh** show at best.
Their databases are not linked.
They don't talk to one another.
Their systems intended to serve but do a poor job.
Maybe privatized healthcare is better?
I don't know but this is the case for why government-run programs like FREE HEALTHCARE will fail.
Yes, it's needed but seriously the CA government-run is pretty bad already. Hard to trust something will be better when the thing running is already failing its citizens!

Covered California determines your…
Covered California determines your subsidy by your pretax income. So it discriminates against people who work. And subsidizes people who don't work. So if you make any decent amount of money to survive in California you have to worry about them coming after you for earning too much pretax income even though you never see that income because it all went to taxes.

Horrendous customer service
Horrendous customer service
The tldr, i had a terrible experience with them, and I think you will too.
First, i applied from abroad, and they said I could only finish over the phone, but then the phone wait was always at least an hour, so I kept getting disconnected. After about 5 days of this, I finally got through.
Second, i was cleared to pay, but the link to blue shield was buggy, and it must have taken me 10 tries over 3 days, and several different browsers before paying successfully.
Then, we were assigned Primary Care doctor's far from us. To change, we had to call and wait forever on bad customer service. Eventually, it came out that we could not use any of the primary care doctors that the CoveredCA website said we could use when we picked our plan.
So, we switched from HMO to PPO. This was 5 days ago. And yet, 5 days later, our plan change is still "being processed" and they told us that our plan needs 7 to 10 business days to be processed so that we can then pay, which takes another 1-2 business days to process, and it took hours of going back and forth (first they said the problem was we hadn't paid, then when I tried to pay they said there needs to be more processing time before we can pay). The last call took 4 hours of going from one agent to the next at CoveredCA and Blue Shield. When an agent doesn't know what to do, they pass you off to someone else and forget about it.

I ended up in ER at Sutter Hospital bs…
I ended up in ER at Sutter Hospital vs Kaiser because I passed out and my mom had me sent to her Hospital not mine. There was nothing wrong; I had felt faint and disoriented for takng too much ibuprofin and naproxen for terrible back pain. That’s all I took. They released me after 5 hrs of tests. Between the ambulance and 5 hr treatment in ER my portion that I owed was $7,000. I only gross $53,000/yr. CovCA has very high deductibles and copays for serious situations. I had to pay the full $5000 deductible plus some. You can really get in debt with one ER visit. So be careful, don’t call an ambulance or go to any emergency situation unless you are on deaths door!! CovCA is good for the very poor where you get everything covered. If you make over $20,000 yr you are screwed. It’s a failing national healthcare system. They don’t have the funds to offer decent coverage. CovCA basically covers my flu shot and a checkup once a year. That’s about it. Need to get a loan if you actually need any treatment.
