After 18 years of exemplary service as a counselor educator, including numerous student initiated awards and, in the recent years, four Outstanding Instructor awards, I was dismissed following a charge brought by a student. The student stated that in the roleplays I presented at Residency were offensive and made her physically ill. These were roleplays taken from real life experiences of my Internship students and from my 50 years of experience as a counselor. The goals was to prepare students for the realities of the profession before they begin their work. The University, fearful of a law suit by a student, decided instead to ignore my stellar performance over the years and dismissed me.

Buyer beware
I began my first doctoral class this week and 3 days into it I unenrolled and requested a full refund of my deposit. My first indication of what a poor quality education I would be receiving would be how cookie cutter the whole set up looked like it is just massively cut and pasted over and over again. Second the professors first two formal messages to the prospective doctoral students was making sure posts and assignments were written using proper grammar and spelling. She could not model this herself by misspelling the word the as well as not forming complete and coherent sentences. The vast disorganization, the lack of rigorous coursework as well as the blatant disregard to communicate effectively, left me feeling shocked and confused. I am so happy I had the intelligence to withdraw and not get stuck in the money pit of such a lack luster program and university. It clearly is a diploma mill and now I know why some very incompetent people hold “doctoral” degrees from places like this. Stay away.

Alert Capella University is shorting your FAFSA Refunds
As a student maintaining a flawless 103.6% academic standing at Capella University, it is unacceptable that backend database failures are actively threatening my housing security. Despite an early April 2026 application and a maximum-need -1500 SAI score, Capella's software has generated a corrupted ledger—flagging my July 29 funding as 'Canceled', routing my institutional scholarship to the year 2099, and completely omitting my eligible Federal FSEOG grant allocation. Internal specialists have refused an emergency manual override. Formal expedited files are now active with the U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General (Case #EF2C8F1BC2) and the FSA Ombudsman (Case #36002406). I demand that leadership authorize an emergency institutional check today to secure my shelter. Prospective students should be aware that this institution's administrative capability failures can directly compromise your livelihood and housing stability. #HigherEd #Compliance #TitleIV #StrategicEducationInc @CapellaUniversity

Arbitrary and Capricious
Capella University is a masterclass in administrative incompetence and toxic lack of accountability. Capella is quick to take your money, but they will actively sabotage your GPA to cover up their own structural failures and negligence. Do not go here.
Their online platform consistently publishes incorrect and false information. If you follow the explicit dates provided by Capella’s own system, your academic fate is entirely arbitrary. In one course, the system deadline is honored. In another, identical scenario, they selectively enforce a secondary date to penalize the student.
There is zero consistency. When confronted with undeniable proof of their platform errors, the administration gaslights the student, cherry-picks when to enforce policies, and shifts the blame.

Improper Financial Aid Denial
I don’t usually write reviews like this, but my experience with Capella University has been incredibly stressful and honestly overwhelming. What should have been a straightforward process turned into weeks of confusion, conflicting information, and emotional strain.
I was told by an enrollment specialist that I would need to start in May and that I would be dropped from my April courses. At the same time, my financial aid was still unresolved, leaving me in a situation where I didn’t know whether I was even allowed to continue. I tried multiple times to get clarity—waiting on hold for long periods, getting disconnected after 30 minutes not once but twice, and then finally speaking to financial aid only to be transferred again. Every conversation gave me a different answer. No one seemed to know what was actually going on.
Because of this confusion and lack of clear guidance, I made the decision to withdraw from my courses. Later, I was told something completely different—that I should not have withdrawn and that the system would have dropped me automatically. Now I’m left worried that I might be charged for something that happened because of their miscommunication. That kind of uncertainty is incredibly stressful, especially when you’re trying to focus on school and manage your future.
This experience has taken a real emotional toll. It’s exhausting to spend hours trying to get answers, only to feel like you’re being passed around without resolution. Students depend on financial aid offices to provide accurate information, and when that breaks down, it affects more than just paperwork—it impacts your stability, your time, and your peace of mind.
I truly hope Capella improves how they communicate and support students, because no one should have to go through this just to enroll and receive the aid they are supposed to have access to.

I'm not happy with the experience
I'm not happy with the experience, particularly around practice education and communication with staff. They could improve by communicating more frequently with students on practice education due dates. Aside from poor advising and communication from the practice education department, it was around 3/5 stars for me. Some of the professors are great.

Highly recommend Capella University
I researched several colleges when starting my graduate degree, but they were just the absolute best choice! I changed my major 3 times, and they patiently said no problem. Had to push my start back a month, again no problem. Everyone has been so kind and helpful. Plus, the platform is easy to use, and I was guided through every step!
