Full refund, but repeated changes broke my trust
Update: This is a condensed version of a much longer custom-ring process so I could also respond to Blingflare’s public reply. I purchased a custom engagement ring from Blingflare using a specific S&P diamond they showed me, confirmed, and sold the ring around. Three weeks into the quoted four-week process, they told me their stone had failed QC and presented a darker replacement they intended to use. I declined because it was not close enough to the stone I had selected. They immediately sent more options, but those were even farther from the original. I told them I was willing to wait for the right stone and even get married without the ring rather than rush. They agreed. After another 2–3 weeks, they sent two more diamonds and told me to “pick one.” That was the first clear shift in tone: what had been an open search suddenly felt like a closed choice between stones I still did not want. I pushed back and said we needed to consider other solutions rather than continue an open-ended search with no real endpoint. After that, stones options began arriving much faster. While waiting for more media on one possible option, I asked whether the original diamond could be reconsidered without warranty, with the risk accepted by me. They said they would reevaluate it if necessary, then continued sending more stones. I eventually chose an acceptable replacement simply to move forward, then asked whether I could buy the original pear separately as a loose stone. The earlier “we will reevaluate” quickly became a firm no. That was the second major change in tone and understanding. I already felt locked into the process, but then Blingflare advertised my ring using an image showing the original diamond already set in it—the same stone they had said they would not set. I found that dishonest and cancelled. They refunded me. Once they understood I only wanted the original as a keepsake after the month-long replacement search, they offered to make it available separately as-is, no warranty. I asked the price. They replied: “You do not need to worry about the price of the original diamond,” and said, “Whether you decide to revisit the ring project in the future or simply keep the original diamond as a personal keepsake, we would be honored for you to have it.” Later, I found an emerald-cut diamond elsewhere. Blingflare reviewed the listing and videos and saw no obvious issue. I then began discussing having them create a completely different custom ring around it. The terms changed again. First, I was told the pear had only been offered if I continued with a fully custom Blingflare ring. I clarified that I was offering exactly that: they would design and manufacture the new ring around my emerald. They agreed this was “indeed” a fully custom project, then narrowed the condition again and said both the setting and center stone had to be supplied by Blingflare. This was the third or fourth time written correspondence changed after I relied on what had been said. I did not walk away because I expected a free diamond. I repeatedly offered to buy the original loose or have it placed in a safe setting rather than expect a gift. I walked away because I no longer trusted the terms to remain the same. Response to Blingflare: This was not merely a “clarity and consistency” issue caused by an unexpected QC concern. It was a repeated, documented change of terms. I did not take the second ring elsewhere because it no longer qualified me to receive the pear. I took it elsewhere because the shifting tone and changing agreements made me unwilling to place another deeply personal custom project in the same environment. I had already offered to purchase the original diamond loose or in a safe setting, and I also offered Blingflare the full custom ring project. Their public response avoids the actual issue and reduces a pattern of changing agreements to a minor communication problem. My warning stands.
