I have used several HR systems throughout my career and BambooHR is by far the most complicated system to use. It is impossible to understand without spending time calculating and reviewing previous requests how many days there are left of leave or other leave. This should really be a straightforward thing to see but not on this system. There is quite a lot of room for improvement to make it user friendly.

I am extremely disappointed with my…
I am extremely disappointed with my experience as a new BambooHR customer.
I signed up for BambooHR for a small business with approximately 20 employees because I wanted a system to help manage our employee records, hiring, and onboarding. I expected that after purchasing the software, I would have access to reasonable support to help me get the system properly set up and operational.
Instead, I learned that the QuickStart option available to me is primarily self-guided training through videos. I participated in a brief call where, even when I asked questions, I was largely directed back to the training videos.
After nearly a month, other than entering employee information, I still have not been able to meaningfully implement the system.
I reached out specifically asking for hands-on assistance from someone who could walk me through my account and show me how to properly set up hiring and onboarding for my current and future employees. I was not asking for HR consulting, strategic planning, custom reporting, or an overhaul of my HR processes.
The solution presented to me was an additional **$2,000 HR Diagnostic** that includes HR consulting, process optimization, system configuration, reporting recommendations, and other services that go well beyond the basic assistance I requested.
That was incredibly frustrating.
As a new customer, I find it difficult to understand why getting live assistance with properly setting up and learning to use software I just purchased would lead to a proposal for an additional $2,000 consulting service.
Training videos are fine as supplemental resources, but they should not be the only practical option for a new customer who needs help getting the product operational.
Had I understood during the sales process that hands-on implementation assistance could potentially require this level of additional expense, it absolutely would have factored into my decision to purchase BambooHR.
I have escalated my concerns directly to BambooHR and am giving the company an opportunity to address the situation. I will gladly update this review if they provide a reasonable resolution.
For other small businesses considering BambooHR, I strongly suggest asking very specific questions before signing up about exactly what implementation assistance is included, what is self-service, and what additional hands-on support will cost.

Stay far away from this company
Stay far away from this company. Onboarding was the only good experience but we can't wait to get off this platform.
The system is not very flexible, and the time and attendance module is horrendous. The time clocks we purchased never worked since day one and they won't take them back! We have tried numerous times to get support and they simply are non-responsive. One day, the entire support staff was out of the office!

They'll send you to "debt collections" if you try to stop using their mediocre platform
Don't be fooled by the friendly onboarding. We were on a month-to-month BambooHR plan. When we decided to stop using it because the software limitations required complex workarounds for basic functionality we needed.
We could not find a clear self-service cancellation option in the dashboard, so we'd have to contact someone and presumably go through a cancellation process – more like a gym membership than a respectable SaaS subscription in 2026.
Instead, I removed the payment card. We assumed the account would simply lapse, especially once access was suspended and we were no longer logging in or receiving any service from it.
On 13 April, BambooHR told us in writing that the account was pending cancellation. On 16 April, they confirmed that it would be cancelled by 20 April if payment was not received. Despite that, they still issued another $425 monthly invoice on 20 April, the exact date they had said the account would be cancelled. They later sent both invoices, totalling $850, to a collection agency.
When I asked BambooHR to explain the contradiction, they said there had been a cancellation option somewhere in the account settings, closed the support case and told us to deal with the collector.
If you use BambooHR month to month, take screenshots and document every cancellation step. Do not assume that removing your card, losing access or receiving written notice of pending cancellation means they have stopped billing. This has caused needless stress for us and whoever is in charge of these hostile practices should find another career.
This is the type of business I really don't mind AI replacing, with a superior alternative vibe-coded in a weekend. I wish them bankruptcy in the next few years or sooner, for these hostile business practices, in favour of better alternatives that don't send their churned customers to a debt collection agency.

BambooHR isn't HR software
BambooHR isn't HR software. It's a psychological experiment designed to answer one simple question:
"How many support tickets can a human being endure before they begin talking to their monitor?"
Creating an account is effortless. Escaping it feels like a side quest written by someone who genuinely dislikes people.
At first, everything seems normal. Friendly interface. Helpful promises. Cheerful support responses. Then you make the mistake of trying to leave.
Suddenly, you're trapped in an endless administrative purgatory where every answer creates two new questions, every solution somehow isn't quite a solution, and every conversation leaves you less certain than when you started.
Support interactions became a fascinating exercise in creative optimism. I was repeatedly assured things were being dealt with, resolved, escalated, reviewed, investigated, or otherwise placed into a mysterious dimension where problems apparently go to retire.
Days pass. Weeks pass. Hope passes.
At some point you stop asking whether the issue will be fixed and start wondering whether BambooHR itself can actually be deleted, or whether it simply continues existing forever like a cursed Victorian doll that keeps reappearing in different rooms of the house.
The experience feels less like managing HR and more like being slowly processed through a bureaucratic black hole. Information goes in. Time goes in. Sanity goes in. Nothing comes back out.
The most impressive feature isn't employee management.
It's the ability to make a grown adult question whether clicking "Create Account" years ago was the single greatest administrative mistake of their life.
To BambooHR's credit, bamboo is famously invasive. Once it takes hold, it's incredibly difficult to remove.
I can only assume the company views this as a product roadmap.

Horrific Customer Service
Their customer service is absolutely horrific. You are not able to speak to a human over the phone. Our company has been with them for 1 1/2 years and it was the biggest mistake we ever made.

Credit Checks for applicants
Credit checks as part of the application process, especially for a Human Resources-focused company (which should know better), are the epitome of classist, unprofessional behavior. I wouldn't work there or hire them because they either don't know better or don't care. I'm not de-escalating clients for a company that doesn't know the root of what it is they do. Simply because someones Dad gave them a piggy bank to open a company with. This is why capitalism is failing. Enjoy it!

Lacks integrity
Sold to us as a full ATS. “Post jobs to Indeed + LinkedIn directly from BambooHR”.
Not true for Canadian companies.
After weeks of emails + back and forth… suddenly “oh yeah there’s a workaround.” Had to switch our account to USD just to try making it work.
Then told job board posting wouldn’t work until onboarding period finished. Waited the full month.
Still not posting to Indeed.
2 months in now.
Salesperson disappeared after the sale.
Customer success just keeps saying “we’ll make it work.”
I wish i had read these reviews earlier.
What a joke! Stay away!
