Hi Tosha, Thanks for posting this concern as many of our customers wonder what the different modes are for. I guess Baby Doppler could've included a better user manual that clarifies this. I have reported this to our design department and while they work on a better user manual I have included below, a brief explanation of the three different modes on a Sonoline B Fetal Doppler. Mode1: (Real-Time) In this mode as soon as you turn the Sonoline B Fetal Doppler "ON" you will see the screen with three dashes, the fetal heart rate display is calculated in real-time as the doppler detects the heart rate. Please keep in mind the heart rate detected in this mode is most accurate however, you have to allow some time (4-8 seconds) for the device to calibrate and display the heart rate. The heart rate in bpm is calculated by the real-time heart rate the device detects and displayed in Beats per Minute. Mode2: (Average) As soon as you switch the Sonoline B Fetal Doppler to Mode 2 you will see the screen with three dashes, the fetal heart rate display is calculated by the average of atleast 8 beats. Please keep in mind the heart rate displayed in this mode is not the actual live heart rate, it is the average of the last 8 beats in the given time frame. In order to see the most accurate average heart rate displayed you must clearly hear atleast 8 preceeding heart beats for the device to calibrate and display the average heart rate. Mode3: (Manual) As soon as you switch the Sonoline B Fetal Doppler to Mode 3 you will see the screen with three dashes, although the sound is emitted and the probe is active, the screen remains at three dashes even if a heart rate is detected. The heart rate is calculated in the background. To manually turn on the screen you must press the backlight button which turns on the heart rate display. Once the display is turned on, it displays the heart rate that was calculated while the heart rate display was off. To re-test, turn the heart rate display off and re-test, you can simply press the backlight button and it will revert back to the three dashes displayed and you can proceed with aditional scans. Please note, listening to the sound emitted by the Sonoline B is the most accurate way of determining the fetal heart rate. The display in numbers can fluctuate as it is merely only an iterpretation of the sound that the device detects, movements by the probe, static and other noises emitted through the body can alter the heart rate display and seem like the numbers are jumping up and down or irregular. Hi Megan, Thank you for your review. Sorry to hear that you were not able to find your little ones heart beat even at 18 weeks. Here at Baby Doppler we try our best to make sure the devices we carry are extremely user friendly and manufactured to best quality possible. Please note that is is very common to have fluctuating numbers on the Sonoline B Fetal Doppler. listening to the sound emitted by the Sonoline B is the most accurate way of determining the fetal heart rate as this is the actual sound the the device detects and emits it though the built-in speakers or headphones (incase you're using headphones). The display in numbers can fluctuate as it is merely only an interpretation of the sound that the device detects, movements by the probe, static and other noises emitted through the body can alter the heart rate display and seem like the numbers are jumping up and down or irregular. In order to obtain an accurate reading on the heart rate display, once the fetal heart rate has been detected, the probe must be held firmly in one spot without movement as any sort of movement may display an irregular heart beat.
