Where do I begin, to tell the story ……..
I have refrained from mentioning every incident / service that niggled me and attempted to give constructive feedback, without the help of AI! Sold by Six Star Cruises as a 4/5 star cruising experience - hard to rate it 2 star. WILL NOT USE agent or Cruise Line again. Costing circa £250 per day ( normally limit my total to £150 per day ) for 18 days holiday ( included 1 day in Cape Town and 2 days in Gran Canary for personal reasons ). My last cruise worked out at only £90 per day. The figures quoted are based on my normal routine of limited drinking, one or two excursions, including the flights and any additional expenses e.g. visas, transfers, hotel stays, gratuities, specialist dining, etc. ie the total cost for the holiday period/days away. I could not fathom what I was paying extra for!! Product Summary - small ship ( not unique ), basically offering an all inclusive alcohol, soft and coffee drinks package, but the package has provision ( this is versus buying packages to suit your wants ), many stop overs with night in Port ( I except I knew the limited stops for this cruise ), with the size of ships and staff numbers gives a more personal experience, FOC laundry self service and room service. Understand from others that Azamara use a possibly unique points system that benefits you on future cruises!! Apologies if I have missed anything. Jackanory - boarding and demarcation were very time consuming; daily events literature was adequate; entertainment was in part OK ( some guest ‘ Stars ‘ were a little rough going ), credit to the ship’s entertainment personnel for their hard work; specialist talks I attended were good if limiting; other types of activities were on par with other Cruise Lines; food was adequate with themed nights but not exceptional, especially the afternoon tea selection; service by the restaurant crew was good, bar staff intermittent, reception OK; the pool side BBQ and White night would have been better if done whilst docked ( wind effected both nights ); late night events I was told were OK ( I only did 3 from memory ); my cabin steward was good, especially on the rough start of the voyage when I was horizontal, he checked on me several times, big THANKS to him; most of the ‘crew’ were polite and willing to chat, I especially liked the Captain humour; laundry room was hot and always busy; the places visited were OK, St Helena being quite unique, having to use the tender ( life boat ) to go ashore; due to weather conditions our 1st Port of Call was cancelled for which we appeared to be given a credit of $1.69 but no explanation given!?; excursion were very expensive ( I organised my own ); there was all the normal facilities aboard such as photo gallery, shop, future cruises, etc. but the push was very sedate. Ship - small but very tired; room size OK for solo cruiser ( me ); I knew about the shower curtain, that was not a problem, the size of the shower area was; room fit and furniture sad; other area’s furnishings just adequate ( I could seldom find a comfortable seat ); walking track and gym were available with a steam room in the gym ( I used this ); 2 hot tubs were adequate when available and working properly and one pool surrounded by sun loungers but one corner was for smokers ( in my case to be avoided at all cost ) whilst the other corner was the outside salad and burger cafe which I used many times as that’s where the ice cream ( Mr Whippy ) machine was. Again apologies if I have missed anything. Pros - Expo exhibition of the different departments of the ship with their staffs to answer any questions; the Namibia entertainment that came aboard ( not a unique I have had this on other cruises I’ve been on, but full of enthusiasm and very, very entertaining ); the specialist presentation I attended; the service crew; the port of St Helena. Cons - in large part the cost, ship’s general condition, on this particular cruise the limit stops; the boarding and demarcation, missed port credit and the ‘product’ did not live up to my expectation. Please note my rating is for the Cruise, facilities and my particular disappointment, not the crew. 5 stars go to the majority of them. Thank you. Hopefully this is useful to others and Azamara.
