I'm looking to rent an apartment in another town so I searched for available apartments. This company wouldn't show me apartments before I spent 15-30 minutes filling out a profile. Sorry, I just wanted to see a price list, not pass out my info for another company to use to spam me. I notice from their rating not many people love what they do.

Hi, thank you for your review and for sharing this feedback. I’m sorry the experience felt frustrating. At Apartment List, we ask renters a few questions up front, like budget, location, and move-in date, so we can tailor your matches and avoid showing you places that don’t fit your needs. We know it can feel like a lot, especially when you’re just looking to browse, and I’ve shared your feedback with our team.
Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts. -Melissa, Customer Experience

Not useful at all, especially if you have a budget.
The site is easy to navigate and lays out information well, but that's all I can say that's positive. The site has you enter all your criteria for what you're looking for, how many beds, baths, the range you'd be willing to pay, amenities, pet friendly, etc. Except it doesn't matter what you put in, because it will just recommend properties that are vaguely what you're looking for based on location alone. It will constantly recommend properties that fall outside most of your criteria, it especially likes to push properties vastly outside your budget, sometimes over $1000 more than your set max budget. What's the point of setting a budget if you won't show me the properties in my budget? If you don't host properties on your site within my budget, why let me set a custom budget outside what your site offers? I know the market for rentable housing is unforgiving right now but sites like these do not help at all. They send me several emails a week telling me "we found you the perfect match!" and it's the same 10 properties they keep showing me every week that I've already rejected. I've been registered and receiving emails for 8 months and have never found a property I could inquire about through this site. In hindsight, I'm thinking it was made only with 60+ retirees in mind, not really helpful for anybody else.

Hi Alexa!
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Apartment List. I’m really sorry to hear that our recommendations haven’t aligned with your preferences—especially after months of searching. That sounds incredibly frustrating, and I appreciate you explaining it in such detail.
At Apartment List we "flex" on certain categories, which is designed to show renters listings that may be slightly outside their original criteria—like price or amenities—when there aren’t enough direct matches. While we are always working to expand our inventory, we strive to give renters a broader picture of what's available nearby. That said, it’s clear that in your case, this wasn’t helpful and may have made the process feel misleading or repetitive.
We’re actively working to make our recommendations more relevant and to better distinguish when a match is an exact fit versus a flexible one. Your feedback about budget mismatches and repeated property suggestions is incredibly helpful and something I’ll be sharing with our product team.
Thanks again for helping us improve,
Melissa, Apartment List Customer Experience

Maybe Scammers on there.
In response to my application for an apartment in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, for a one-bedroom unit priced at $1,800, the property manager requested personal information, including my name and credit score, to assess my ability to pay the rent. I provided the requested details and was informed that I qualified for the apartment.
An open house is scheduled for Friday, but I am permitted to view the apartment on Thursday. A deposit fee of $1,800 is required for the viewing, and a refund will be issued if the apartment is not up to code upon inspection.
The property manager emphasized that attending the open house does not guarantee my acceptance of the apartment due to its high demand. This revelation prompted me to question how I could be the first to view the apartment before other applicants.
Initially, I intended to transfer the deposit fee via Zelle, as the property manager provided a specific account number. However, I found this request suspicious, as previous Zelle transfers from my account were processed to a limited liability company. The scam account number belonged to a personal account.
Fortunately, Zelle has a transaction limit for new users. Consequently, I emailed renter to inquire about the transaction limit and did not receive a response within two days.
Refraining from sending the deposit fee, I decided I wanted to attend the open house to assess the apartment firsthand to see if they are real or not. Additionally, I considered visiting the building to find out more information because there’s someone using their address to scam people and that could reflect bad on them… Apartment list.. I can’t trust u because u clearly don’t verify ur renter properly. And u may get sue if someone scams the wrong person..

Hi Rachida,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience — we’re really sorry to hear about this concerning situation. Keeping renters safe is one of our top priorities, and we appreciate you flagging this potential scam.
While we work hard to partner only with trusted property managers and perform initial listing validations, we also rely on our partners to maintain the integrity of their listings. If you’re able to share the name, address, and Apartment List listing for this property, we’ll investigate and remove it from our platform right away. We appreciate you helping us keep the Apartment List community safe.
For anyone reading this: you should never be asked to send money before seeing a property in person or signing a lease, especially through untraceable methods like Zelle or cash apps. If anything ever feels off, please don’t hesitate to contact us directly — your feedback helps protect others in the Apartment List community.
Again, thank you for raising this. We're taking it seriously and hope you find a safe and trustworthy home soon.

Useless site
Useless site
Finding an apartment is like finding a job. All these sites have mass collected options that are usually duds or not as described.
At least on those other sites when I put in a max rent they don't recommend to me places that are WAY outside my affordability range. This company is completely useless and a waste of time. You'd have better luck on Craigslist.

Went through all kinds of steps..
Went through all kinds of steps, put in personal info and phone number, and it was an empty list. No matter how many things I adjusted. Southwestern PA, so that may have a part to play but even still..

Hi James! Thank you for taking the time to review Apartment List. While we are always expanding our inventory, I am sorry to hear that you did not match with any properties that met your criteria in your area. Our matchmaker quiz is designed to do the hard work of gathering information about you upfront to do the heavy lifting of apartment searching for you. Usually, adding more locations or shifting your search paramaters (as it sounds like you did) will improve your results. At Apartment List, we also "flex" on location and budget parameters to maximize the number of matches you see.

I feel it’s a scam
I have tried to set up an appointment to view the property but all I get is an email asking for all my information and a payment to secure the property as there are already 28 people interested.
This has got scam written all over it.
It’s a real shame because I loved the place
